Mommy Hobbies: Finding Something Fun To Do When You're A Super Busy Parent!

Being a mom often means you’re busy, stretched thin, and always running behind someone else! It seems to be part of raising kids; you get very little time to yourself, whether you want to sit down and have a coffee for five minutes or start up an art project without worrying about a deadline!

But being this busy shouldn’t mean there’s no fun in your life. You can still find something enjoyable to do on a regular basis, you just need to find something that fits in with your life as a mom too. That’s something this post can help with!

Mommy hobbies are important, and you deserve to find something you’re passionate about! And with that in mind, here are some ideas for tracking down a hobby that’ll fit around your otherwise packed schedule.

Find Something That Can Be Easily Multitasked

Multitasking is something moms can be quite good at, so why not bundle a hobby into your multitasking efforts as well? This way you can do something enjoyable to relax at the same time you’re taking care of the ‘admin’ that goes on in your household.

For example, if you’re a big reader, popping some earbuds in and putting on an audio book is super easy. You can then listen to a book as you go about the usual mundane activities of the day, such as sorting laundry, meal prepping for the week, or running to the grocery store.

If you like to write, you could also set up your phone to record you dictating the next part of your story or a new poem you’ve thought of. It may feel a little weird to say it all out loud but catch it on your phone as you’re doing busy things and then get it all down on paper later.

Find Something You Don’t Have to Commit to

When you’re a mom, you’re never quite sure when you’ll have free time to yourself! As such, some of the best hobbies you can pick up are those that don’t require commitment. You can just dip in and out when you like - and when you have the time to - and you’ll still be able to have fun.

Scrapbooking is a great creative hobby of this type. You can make new collage pages whenever it takes your fancy, and you can pin pieces in place to properly arrange and stick down later. So, if one of the kids comes over and needs your help with something, you can just close your scrapbook and you won’t lose out!

Playing video games or online games is another good hobby of this kind. You can try out some no gambling poker rounds at your own leisure, if you like card games, or download a visual novel to go through at your own pace. You don’t lose any progress on a project like this, nor do you become ‘less good’ at the thing you love to do - you can just play as and when!

Find Something That Gets You Out of the House

Moms shouldn’t spend all their time indoors, even when the kids aren’t home. You should have the chance to get out of the house on at least a bi-weekly basis outside of your parenting schedule. As such, think about a hobby you could take up that would guarantee that for you.

If you have a pet, think about taking them for longer walks than usual. Head up to spots you don’t usually go to, like a park or woodland that has public trails, and spend a good hour going round. Or if you’d rather do something more creative, pack your sketchbook into a bag, make sure you take a portable stool with you, and have an outdoor sketching half hour.

Find Something You and Your Partner Can Do Together

It’s common for moms to find activities to do with the kids, but why not focus on finding something both you and your partner can go in on together? That way you can keep each other on track with your shared hobby, ensuring each other has time to dedicate to it, and have some more fun relaxing together over it.

If you find you’re having far fewer date nights than you used to, and very few of your conversations are about anything other than the kids, this is a good step towards putting some quality adult time back into your relationship. Ironically, this can sneak out on its own without you even noticing!

Find Something You Can Do in Bed!

If you’re a busy parent who’s always a chronically tired one too, this is the tip for you! If you can find a hobby to try out that doesn’t even require you getting out of bed, you’ll be able to rest up at the same time.

If you’re a big film buff, start having movie nights in your bedroom. If you love to complete puzzles, get a tray or jigsaw roll that you can rest on the bed and pour the pieces out over it. And if you’d like to try something a bit more active, you can always try out bed stretching routines that are very good for your muscles and bones!

Finding a Hobby as a Mom

When you’re a mom, finding the right hobby is a much more careful process. There’s a lot to consider, which leaves a lot of tiring trial and error on your plate. Before long, the attic gets packed with the remnants of hobbies you tried but had to give up!

But when you’re a busy parent, and will be for at least another decade yet, there’s not much you can do about that! So, let’s make the hobby selection process easier on you instead.

To do that, take the factors above into account when you’re searching for something fun to do, and don’t give up on an activity until you’re sure it’s not for you. Really, if it’s fun, keep going!
