Have the cold temperatures set in where you live? We are gearing up for our first snow of the season tomorrow into Thursday -- thankfully only looking like an inch or two. Even though I have lived in New England all my life and should be used to the cold winter months, I seem to become more and more of a wimp as fall turns into winter here on the East coast. I am already counting down the days until spring and then the summer heat. And, I can't help but laugh at this, as when it is summer, I am ready for it not to be hot anymore. If only there was a happy medium of weather all year round, then I would be a happy camper.
I don't know about you, but when it it cold out or I see snow outside, the last thing I want to do is go outside or take myself to the gym to work out. I would rather stay in my warm house and find something else to keep myself busy and getting in some physical fitness. Well, this year, I am taking up my indoor fitness game and introducing the Whirly Board not just for me to use, but for my whole family. It is becoming a challenge of sorts -- where we see who can stand on the board the longest, do difficult poses and staying on the board while we whirl around, etc.
What is Whirly Board you ask?
"The Whirly Board, is a skateboard-shaped balance board that spins 360°, and is designed for all ages to improve agility, strengthen core muscles, create better posture, and help prevent injury. Unlike traditional balance boards on a separate two-dimensional roller, Whirly Board allows users to experience 360-degree movement. The Whirly Board’s distinctive design toting a skateboard deck with a large center balance ball and two smaller nose and tail balance balls provides users with three independent balance points, allowing for various maneuvers and fitness exercises."
Last holiday season I featured a similar board that had a strap you stand on and could exercise with. But, having tried out the Whirly Board, I have to say I am liking this one more, as you can do so much more with it, and it really does keep our attention and has us wanting to stick with this board over the other one.
We have been keeping the Whirly Board in the living room, and I love walking in and seeing my girls or husband using it while watching TV, or just to get in some fitness and as a stress reliever throughout the day. You don't need to spend forever on the board to feel the benefits of this balance board. And, it is so easy to use. Yes, it may take a few times to get your balance on the Whirly Board at the start. But, once you feel comfortable standing on it, then you'll be ready to have fun with this unique balance board.
Benefits of Using a Whirly Board Balance Board:
Strengthen Your Core - Works those hidden muscles that are neglected that lead to poor balance, including abdominal muscles, lower back muscles, glutes, lats, and abductors and adductors.
Improve Agility and Help Prevent Injury - The ability to quickly switch from one position to another is someone that everyone has to work on on a daily basis -- from professional athletes to young kids, this balance board will help increase your agility while preventing injury.
Strengthen and Rehab Your Ankle and Knee Joints - The balance board helps with core conditioning to help you improve and strengthen muscles to help reduce knee and ankle injuries. And, if you are rehabbing these joints, the balance board helps shorter recovery time.
Create Better Posture -- The wobble balance board helps develop proper posture to keep your spine in a straight line, and not slumping over or curving. This balance board helps strengthen your deep muscles in your torso that rarely get worked out, thus helping to create better and straighter posture.

You need to concentrate when on the Whirly Board, and will find yourself focusing more than usual to keep your posture and composer to stay on the board. And, if you move a certain way and wobble, your mind will react fast and help you settle back into place and regain stability on the balance board.
Burn Calories and Lose Weight -- Depending on your weight and height and intensity of your workout, you can burn on average 300-444 calories an hour by incorporating the Whirly Board into your exercise routine. By doing things like squats, planks, lunges and push ups, you will find yourself burning small and large muscle groups and burn more calories.
Increase Circulation -- Many people use the balance board while working and in a standing position. This helps keep blood flowing throughout your board, and not sitting and pooling like it does when you sit sedentary for long periods of time. By standing upright and balancing on the board, you not only keep your body in an active mode, but increase circulation. If you use the board as a standing desk, you can find yourself burning upwards of 100 calories an hour.
Boost Your Mood and Have Fun -- This can be achieved for all ages as the balance board is a challenging workout that will have your laughing and finding yourself pushing yourself to master the board and stay balanced, while trying out different exercise moves. In turn you will find this helps boost your mood by increasing serotonin to the brain, as well as increase endorphins which boost your mood.
Sports that will be improved by incorporating the Whirly Board into your exercise routine -- Skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, and wakeboarding to name a few. All of these sports take control, balance, strong leg muscles and the ability to concentrate and think fast on your feet. The balance board will help improve all these needed skills to make you a better player/athlete.
Workout Anywhere -- You can use the Whirly Board at home, at the office, outdoors year-round as long as you have flat surface and space around you to move about.

I really like how the Whirly Board also shared great exercise ideas to get you started once your bring their balance board into your home. They break the workouts down into different categories -- upper body workouts, leg and lunge workouts, core workouts, general balance workouts, squat and glute workouts, and mobility and range of motion. Each of the workouts are shown through a video, which is great as you can see the proper way to do each, and not rely on drawing or exercises told in word form. I, for one, prefer to watch workouts and learn new exercises by watching a video of it. Many of the videos are around 25 minutes, which will give you a good workout. You can pick and choose which workouts to do each day, or pair a couple to get a good workout in for certain parts of your body or core muscle groups. You can see what I mean by checking out the exercise tab on the Whirly Board website here: https://whirlyboard.com/balance-board-exercises/.
It really becomes a challenge during the cold winter months to want to get moving, let alone get my girls moving, especially when we are home most of the week homeschooling. But, thanks to the Whirly Board, the girls and I can pull out the balance board and break up our day by getting in a little exercise in such a fun way. It doesn't feel like a workout when you are balancing and doing the different balance exercises with the board. I find that when I watch one of the 25 minute exercise videos from their website, it goes by so fast, compared to if I had gone to the gym and worked out walking the treadmill or with the different machines. And, I walk away really feeling muscles I never knew I had really getting a workout and feeling much stronger. Each and every time my girls and I get on the Whirly Board, we find ourself gaining better posture and our balance improves both when on the board and when we get off. My husband loves standing on it while doing his morning check-in meetings over zoom. Before he would sway side to side to keep the blood flowing, but finds the Whirly Board is so much more fun and offers so many more benefits than just standing at his pop up desk in his home office.
Like I said earlier, the Whirly Board can be used by all ages and experience levels. Always start off slow and get used to the board before trying out the different exercises recommended on the Whirly Board website, creating your own or bringing this balance board into your daily workout routines.
It doesn't take long to get used to it and find your balance. And, once you do, you will want to reach for this balance board daily for fun and exercise. So, if you are like me and buy a "family gift" each Christmas, I highly recommend the Whirly Board as it will be used by all members of your family and all ages. Or, if you struggle to get your tweens and teens moving and exercising, make exercising fun by introducing them to the Whirly Board. My girls love it, and I don't have to push them to use it, as they will do it on their own and usually fight as they want to use it throughout the day once they see the other having fun balancing on it. I guess I will have to get them each one. :-) You can order the Whirly Board online, and have it shipped directly to your door. And, know that with your purchase you are supporting a small-business and buying a USA-made product -- so a win-win!
