Christmas is my favorite holiday, not just because of the festive lights and holiday cheer that comes with the holiday season, but because I have an excuse to get in the kitchen more to bake cookies for cookie swaps, to gift to family and friends, and just make sure we have freshly baked treats on hand for family and friends who stop by to visit, and even a few left out for Santa on Christmas Eve.

"An updated and expanded edition of the bestselling collection of recipes from the Chicago Tribune's famous holiday cookie contest, featuring more than 100 mouthwatering recipes perfect for any holiday gathering."

Even though I own so many cookie cookbooks, I will never have enough! :-)  So, when I recently saw that Agate Publishing released "Holiday Cookies, 2nd Edition" by the Chicago Tribune Staff, I had to get my hands on a copy of this cookie cookbook to flip through and flag recipes to try this holiday baking season.  I received my review copy the other day, and I was quick to grab a pad of sticky notes and a hot cup of cocoa, and settled in to read this recent cookbook release from cover to cover.  I really find reading through a cookbook relaxing and fun, especially ones that have a lot of full color photos of recipes, and this cookbook didn't disappoint.

With all the cookie cookbooks I own, I was surprised I didn't have the first edition of this cookbook.  But, now I have this cookbooks, which now includes 28 recipes from past contest winners. There are recipes for all levels of baking expertise, so you don't have to feel intimidated when you look through this cookbook and see all the delicious and festive cookies.  The cookbooks is broken down in categories including Fruit & Nut Treats, Chocolate Delights, Brownies & Bars, Simple Drop Cookies, Sandwich Cookies, and Sugar & Spice, so you are bound to find cookies to bake for your family to enjoy during the holidays and throughout the year.  In addition to easy to follow along recipes with full-color photos, this cookbook also includes helpful baking tips and the stories about how each recipe came about, which I enjoyed reading.

I really like how this cookbook includes a variety of delicious recipes that are a good mix of traditional and modern spins on desserts and sweet treats all diverse cultural backgrounds including Tropical Nuevo Latino Cookies, Middle East Fruit Bars, and Kolachkes to name a few.  I can't wait to include a sampling of these cookies in the cookie platter I make up for our family's annual cookie swap.  They will be unexpected and sure to tantalize everyone's tastebuds as they reach for each new cookie to devour. :-)

There are so many great recipes I have flagged to try out this holiday baking season.  I started baking this past week, and love how the house smells amazing with each new batch of cookies I pull out of the oven.  The best part is sharing them with my family and having them share just how much they love what I bake up. So far my family has enjoyed Jelly Thumbprints, Chocolate Crowns, Hot Chocolate Cookies, and Uptown Brownies.  The brownies were a big hit and gone by the end of the day. I already have plans to make the brownies again this week as I keep getting requests from my girls.  And, I will definitely be taking advantage of these upcoming cold days, some with expected snow, to get in the kitchen and bake up some more sweet treats, so that we have delicious cookies and desserts to enjoy with hot chocolate and when we settle in to to watch our nightly holiday movie as we count down to Christmas.   If you love cookies and baking, and don't already own the first edition of this cookies cookbook, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the new "Holiday Cookies, 2nd Edition" by Chicago Tribune Staff, available now in hardcover from Agate Publishing.  This is one holiday cookie recipe I guarantee you will pull from the bookcase time and time again.
