As part of our English Literature studies in homeschooling this year, we have been studying classics from Jane Austen. We would read the book and then follow up by watching movies that have released based on the books. So far, we have done Emma, Pride and Prejudice, and are wrapping up Sense and Sensibility, before we move onto Mansfield Park and Persuasion, before we wrap up the school year.
My girls really like when they are able to compare books to movies, as they like to rank them and say which is better...the book or the movie. Plus, they have said because of the way these books in particular are written, they are better able to grasp the content by seeing the stories play out in a movie. Both of my girls were fans of Emma movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and started to fall in love with the writing style of Jane Austen after reading and watching Emma.
In addition to watching the movies this school year, I added something fun and unique to the mix, which the girls are loving. Thanks to the folks at Laurence King Publishing, I introduced their The Jane Austen Game, an immersive board game, which released back on October 8th, and is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-a-million, IndieBound, Indigo and Bookshop. This board game reminded me of fun dating games I played as a kid including Dream Date, Mystery Date, Heart Throb Dream Date Game and Girl Talk. The only difference with this game and the ones I played as a kid and tween, is that this one is all about the characters Jane Austen wrote about. Players go from ball to ball dancing and collecting admirers before deciding if they want to settle down with a suitor or stay unattached and become a Woman of Independence Mind like Austen herself.
The first time my girls and I played this game, we couldn't help but admire the beautifully put together deck of cards which feature the different Austen characters which have the books they are featured in at the bottom of their cards.
Before we played the game, we took time to go through each and every card admiring the illustrations which are done by Barry Falls who is based out of Ireland. The sturdy game board is also a beauty to look at, as it depicts scenes you would except during the elegant Regency era of Jane Austen.
Setup and learning the game rules was easy, and in no time we were moving around the board collecting and filling up our game cards. This game was a fun way to recall story lines and characters from Austen's work, and add a fun layer to learning about these classics. We are a game playing family, but haven't played an immersive game like this before based on books we read, and have to say it was so much fun to play. We play this game at least once a week, usually on Fridays which are our catch up and fun days with schooling. It gives the girls something to look forward to, and also gets them excited about wanting to read more Jane Austen books in the future outside of our schooling.
If you are a fan of Jane Austen, or even participate in a book club where you make themed dishes or play games based on the books, this game would be a fun addition to your Jane Austen discussions. As you can see from the photos above, this is really a well put together board game with breathtaking illustrations and a fun feel to it. With the holidays fast approaching, this would also make for a great gift idea to gift Austen fans, or those who just like to play immersive board games with friends and family. I don't see us getting bored of this game, as it is different each and every time we play it. Highly recommend!
