It isn't Halloween in our house until we have sat down as a family to watch the classic animated movie, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" special. But, if you don't have an Apple+ subscription, then it may be hard to find streaming or airing on television, if you don't already own the movie on DVD. If you don't own the movie, but want to share this classic Halloween story with your kids as you gear up for trick or treating tomorrow night, then the folks at Simon & Schuster have you covered with their lap board book of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown".
I grew up watching this iconic Halloween special each October, and now get to share this tradition with my own children. And, this year, in addition to watching the streaming movie on Apple+, we also got to enjoy play out on the pages of this sturdy board book. Now, I a know what you are thinking...why would tweens/teens want to sit with their mom and read a board book? Well, my girls still love to spend quality time together and love when I read to or along with them. And, Peanuts books are still a hit in our house. I always leave some out each season on our coffee table in our living room. Friends and family are always quick to pick them up and read them when visiting. And, it gives way for great conversation about memories of this wonderful Peanuts holiday films.
My girls and I read this book this other night, and as soon as we were done, we had to go back and take in the fun, playful illustrations that fill the pages of this sturdy board book. These illustrations are taken right from the movie, and make you feel like you are watching the movie, even though it is just a page in a book.
When we were done reading the book, my girls grabbed this book from me and headed to the table to try their hand at drawing some of the illustrations in the book. It ended up being a fun-filled Peanuts evening with the reading of the book, to impromptu drawing, followed up by snuggling up on the couch to watch the special on streaming. We had so much fun with this book that we plan to read it again tonight, and follow it up with the movie before heading to bed. I think we have a new Halloween Eve tradition thanks to this board book available now from Simon & Schuster.
If you loved "It's a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" growing up, why start a new tradition by reading the book during the month of October and following it up with a book/movie combo on Halloween Eve like us. It is a great way to get the whole family together, to enjoy time together, as you gear up for an evening of tricks and treats. :-)
