Last night after work and school, we headed to Worcester, MA to take in the opening night of CORTEO by Cirque du Soleil. What a great way to kick off the new year with a fun family-friendly show! Even though my girls were tired from a long day of online classes, as soon as the show began and the curtains went up, they were all smiles and on the edge of their seats, watching this amazing show. Even though we saw this show back in 2019, they were excited to see it again. And, you know what? All Cirque du Soleil are worth seeing time and time again, as each and every time you see it, you see something you missed the previous time. For instance, my girls were younger and shorter back in 2019, and had no idea there were live musicians playing on the sides of the stage. When my youngest daughter noticed this last night, she kept gazing at the musicians playing their instruments and the singers singing, as they added more drama and excitement to the show. My oldest daughter realized the placement of the stage this year, and how we were on one side of the stage, and the across the stage on the other side held all the patrons on the other end of the DCU center seating area. She thought the way the stage was placed and how people were seated on both sides made for a great experience. And, once the show started, the center stage circled around so we were able to see all angles of the show, which was really neat.
About CORTEO:
"Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.
In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. An atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo."
The show had a run time of around 2 hours with a 20 minute intermission. While it is longer than most family-friendly shows we have taken our girls to, it went by fast, and there was never a dull moment where the girls were asking "How much longer?" Instead, when the curtain came down at the end, the girls wanted more, and asked when we could see the show again. They were all smiles when I told them that CORTEO is just one of many by Cirque du Soleil shows touring the country right now. So, maybe as another fun family night out we can take in another show later in the year.
I usually have a favorite (or two) parts to a show like this, but it was so hard to choose, as they were all so good. You know you are experiencing a great show when you can't narrow down a favorite part, as they are all so good! :-) My girls, however, couldn't stop talking about the golf ball act where a performer kept popping his head out of the whole in the stage, trying to distract and get away from the two performers looking to hit this "golf ball" with their club. The girls couldn't stop laughing during the act, and continued laughing in the car talking about it, all the way home. And, they woke this AM still talking about it.
What better way to kick off the new year than by taking in the CORTEO by Cirque du Soleil show in Worcester, MA, or one of their many other stops in 2023. So many great memories will be made, and your whole family will be talking about the show for some time to come.
