Have you done any holiday baking yet? I have pulled out a bunch of our favorite holiday cookie and pastry cookbooks in hope to make a few recipes in each cookbook with my girls in the next week and half, along with a few new recipes found in the new release (arrives on bookshelves in the USA today 12/13) "Giuseppe's Italian Bakes: Over 60 Classic Cakes, Desserts and Savory Bakes" by Giuseppe Dell'Anno. If the name sounds familiar then you watch cooking shows like me and saw that he was the 2021 winner of the Great British Bake Off! I streamed this season and was hoping he would put out a cookbook, as he not only wowed the judges on the show, but me as well. I loved his baking style, and many of the things he made on the show reminded of things my Italian Nana used to make during the holidays for the whole family to enjoy. Unfortunately she is no longer with us, and didn't share many of her family recipes with us before she passed, as they were all up in her head or she didn't have actual measurements for them, as they were a pinch of this, a handful of this, a little bit of this, etc. So, when I saw that there was a new cookbook being released from the 2021's Great British Bake Off! winner, I had to get my hands on a copy and see if some of his Italian baked goodies were just like I remember my Nana making.
I received the Giuseppe's Italian Bakes: Over 60 Classic Cakes, Desserts and Savory Bakes" cookbook the other day, and started to flip through the recipes. So many of the full color photos included with the recipe looked like things I enjoyed at my Nana's house when I was a child. I lost count of how many recipes I flagged in the cookbook, wanting to make and try out -- but, it looked like half of the book when I closed it. So far I have only made the following two recipes -- Polenta Sponge Cake and Canastrelli.
Both were easy to make and while the polenta sponge cake didn't take like the one my Nana used to make, it was similar to ones I have had in the North End in Boston. Everyone in my family enjoyed it, and we ended up with only one slice leftover, which my youngest daughter woke early in the morning to call dibs on and eat before the rest of us had a chance at it. The Canastrelli biscuit tasted similar to what my Nana made and it made me smile as I shared stories of having my first cup of real coffee along with these biscuits at my Nana's when I was 9 years old, with my girls. It was nice sharing my Nana and memories of her with my girls, as they will never get the chance to meet such an amazing woman, and the one who got me excited to bake and cook for my family.
I am so glad I had the opportunity to check out the Giuseppe's Italian Bakes: Over 60 Classic Cakes, Desserts and Savory Bakes" cookbook, and can't wait until next week, which is dubbed baking week in our house, as I will be making a few more recipes from this book to share with my family. Knowing just how tasty the pound cake and biscuits were I baked up from this cookbook, I know my family and I will be in for a treat for other recipes I whip up from this cookbook.
If you love collecting cookbooks like I do, or are a fan of baking shows like Great British Bake Off!, then I highly recommend you check out the new Giuseppe's Italian Bakes cookbook which released in the USA today. With over 60 sweet and savory recipes to make, you are bound to stumble upon a handful, if not more, new family favorites you will make time and time again.
