Very few people stay in the same place forever. Your life is constantly changing and new challenges and opportunities arise all the time. If you get a new job, meet the love of your life, or decide to have children, you will most likely want to upgrade your current residence for a more suitable home.

But a change of scenery doesn’t always have to be the result of a major life change. There are plenty of reasons to not want to be tied down in one place. Perhaps you want to live in the countryside or be closer to your family. Maybe you crave the social scene of a big city and you’re isolated and alone.

Moving is a big commitment, so it’s understandable that you might be feeling uncertain. It takes  a great deal of time, effort, and money to pack up all your belongings and transport them across the country. You have to hunt real estate websites for properties that catch your eye, visit countless homes, and sell your existing one to a new buyer before you can make the transition. You’d be forgiven for deciding that it’s not worth the hassle. But if you’re tossing up the pros and cons you need to be sure you’re making the right choice. To help you put your mind at rest, here are four telltale signs it’s time to move home.

You don’t have enough space

Perhaps when you moved into your current home, it was just you and your partner. But now you might be thinking of starting a family, in which case you might need some more space. Or maybe it’s just the two of you but you now have more money to break out of your cramped urban space and get more freedom in the countryside. Look ahead to the future and think about where you want to be in five years, ten years or beyond. Will your current home accommodate your ideal lifestyle or will you need something a little more spacious?

You spend a lot of time travelling

Are you always spending your free time stuck in traffic jams or sitting on packed trains? If you are having to make a lengthy commute to work you might want to consider moving closer. This way you can reduce the amount of time you spend on the move and reclaim it for your own leisure. You’ll also save a great deal of money too.

You don’t feel socially connected

What’s your social life like in your current area? If you have a huge group of friends that you regularly hang out with, you might be happy to stay. But if you often feel isolated and alone, maybe you need to live somewhere with a more vibrant social scene.

Your career is going nowhere

Are you happy with your current level of career progression? Are you in a job that you enjoy with a clear pathway to your ideal position? If the answer is no, then what’s stopping you from moving away to find the job of your dreams?
