Disclosure: I was sent a screener from the folks at Time Life in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.
I couldn't believe that my husband had never seen a Richard Pryor stand up act, or any of his movies. But, thanks to Covid and having extra time to watch shows and movies as we are still working from home, I have used this time to catch my husband up on all things Richard Pryor. Just the other day, after putting the Christmas tree up and sending the girls to bed, I introduced my husband to one of my favorite Richard Pryor movies. As a child, I would watch The Toy around the holidays with my family, and still remember sitting on the living room floor laughing at Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason this is comedy. They sure don't movies like this one anymore. Once my husband was done watching this movie for the first time, he agreed that Richard Pryor was hilarious in it, and all his comedic lines and gestures came so effortlessly. I told him that he was like that in all his other movies as well as stand up acts. After scouring YouTube and the Internet for clips of Richard Pryor to share with my husband, I found that Time Life had an entire Richard Pryor collection available, that covered his amazing career as a comedian and actor.
Thanks to the kind folks at Time Life, they graciously sent along the 13-Disc Set, "The Ultimate Richard Pryor Collection: Uncensored" for me to review. And, my husband and I have been working through each DVD disc in the evenings, once the girls have gone to bed. My husband is enamored like I and so many other Richard Pryor are (still to this day) at just how multi-talented Pryor was. Time Life did an amazing job at packing over 26 hours of raw, uncensored footage from his stand-up acts, TV appearances and shows, along with never been seen footage and an interview with his window, Jennifer Lee Pryor.
We are halfway through the amazing 13-DVD collection, and are loving everything we have seen so far. In addition to watching these DVD's, I am making a point to also share all Richard Pryor's movies from the 80's with my husband. Just the other night we watched "See No Evil, Hear No Evil." My husband is a fan of Gene Wilder thanks to our youngest being a huge Willy Wonka fan and watching the movie over and over again. He never knew Wilder was so funny, and said he played well opposite Pryor in this movie.
I can't wait to finish watching the remaining DVD's that make up this collection with my husband, especially the sit down interview with his widow. I am finding myself learning things about Pryor I didn't know, and am loving all the raw footage and clips from TV appearances from back in the day. If only this amazing and oh so talented actor was still around today...just, imagine the comedies he would be making for us to enjoy for years to come.
If you are a Richard Pryor fan or know someone who is, then you will want to check out this 13-DVD collection from Time Life. It would make a great gift to find under the tree come Christmas morning, and will provides hours and hours of laughter.
