When Disney's live action version of Cruella released to on Demand during quarantine, my girls got a bunch of their girlfriends together through a Zoom call and did a virtual movie screening of the movie. They all had been waiting eagerly, like so many, for its release, and when it finally released, they wanted to be first to see. So, all the parents paid for the On Demand release, and for over 3 hours, they watched the movie, and then chatted after about their favorite parts, before setting up another time later in the week to watch it again. It went on like this for a few months, with the movie never getting old. And, when my youngest daughter started thinking of Halloween costumes for this year, Cruella was top on her list, as has it found its way to the top of her holiday wish list, too. I found some great Cruella clothing and the plush dog on the Disney Store website, and continue to keep an eye out for other great movie memorabilia and fun stuff to pick up and leave under the tree for her. But, one thing I don't have to get, as we were lucky to be sent an advance copy of was the manga release from Viz Media back in August, "Disney Cruella: The Manga: Black, White and Red." I forgot to share a review as my daughter kept taking from my desk to read it over and over again, cover to cover. She even passed it around to her friends to read, who eventually had their moms buy them copies off Amazon so they could read whenever they wanted. But, when I was cleaning up my daughter's room the other day, I saw the book, and remembered I forgot to share it with you all. So, I thought what better time than Black Friday, when everyone is up late from Thanksgiving shopping for deals and steals. If you are shopping the Black Friday deals at Amazon, be sure to add this book to your cart before you check out, to surprise that special Disney Cruella fan in your life. :-)
Because of the content, this book is geared towards older kids ages 12-18 years old. Both of my girls are big in Manga books and love when Viz Media releases these type of books based on their favorite movies and TV shows. When we first received this book, I was able to sneak it first and read, and have to say it is really good. I am not usually a Manga or comic book style reader, but I loved Disney's Cruella, and the cover art alone intrigued me and had me wanting to flip through the book to see what it was about. As soon as I skimmed the first few pages, I found a cozy spot and read this book cover to cover. :-) Then, when I was done I had to share it with my girls, as I knew they would like it, too. And, that they did! They both zipped through the book, and we spent the next afternoon talking about our favorite parts, before the girls tried their hand at recreating some of the illustrations in this Manga. This book does a great job in covering what we see in the movie, as well as adding more about her designs and artistic flare. The illustrations really capture this, and I love how the black and white illustrations give not only an eery feel to different sections of the book, but then make her dresses and masterpieces stand out and have you the reader take notion of the dress lines and over simplicity of the designer. Really great job all around with the book and illustrations, and a must have for fans of Disney's live action film, Cruella. This Manga would make a great addition to a Cruella bundle you may be putting together, or tucked into your tween/teen's stocking. And, at only $13.49, you can't go wrong with the price. This is one book they will pick up and read time and time again. It still remains a favorite among my girls, and I plan to read it again soon, too, before we sit down and watch the movie again.
