For part of our homeshooling this year, we are concentrating on women's studies.  I wanted to be able to introduce my girls to some amazing women both well known and those who don't seem to get the recognize they earn and deserve, as a reminder to my girls that they can dream big and accomplish anything they put their mind to.  We have covered so many great women in history since starting back to school in August, and continue to cover a new group of women each week.

During the summer Olympics my girls really got excited for all the women's sports and seeing all the women athletes perform and medal. They were in awe of their athleticism and their dedication to their craft.  And, as part of our schooling, I wanted to make sure I covered many of these women in sports.  One book I have been using heavily to cover sportswomen is "Run Like a Girl: 50 Extraordinary and Inspiring Sportwomen" by Daniella Brown and published by Button Books.  I really like how this book is set up -- sharing achievements and accomplishments of each woman, along with amazing and lifelike action illustrations of them in their sport.   The author makes a point to also touch on these women's losses, as a reminder to readers that failing is possible, but it also gives you more drive to get back up and try again -- as, well as how you can't win them all, but you can have fun by doing something you love.

My girls are really enjoying this book and celebrating these amazing and oh so talented women in sports.  The quotes shared throughout the book are also inspiring and are a great way to show and remind girls of all ages that they can achieve greatness, if they are brave, determined, and dedicated, just like these fifty women in the book.  If you are looking for a book that will empower girls to be their best and dream big, while also learning about other amazing women who are making history and achieving goals they have dreamed about growing up, then you'll want to pick up and share this book with them.  It is a great book to read as a fun mother/daughter book together, and talk about the women after.  Or, if your girls want a fun girl power book, this book is perfect for them!

More about this book:

"Get ready to meet some incredible women who made their mark in the world of sport in Run Like a Girl by Danielle Brown (Button Books, RRP $19.99, September 2021). It’s an inspiring book that features 50 women from around the globe who have all achieved remarkable things and excelled at their chosen sport.

Danielle Brown is an inspiring woman in her own right and is a double Paralympic gold medallist and five-time World Champion in archery. She was World Number One for her entire career and made history when she became the first disabled athlete to represent England in an able-bodied discipline at the Commonwealth Games. Danielle now works as a keynote speaker and specializes in self-development, success skills and breaking through barriers. This is her debut solo book and in it she has written biographies for 50 highly successful sportswomen, many of whom she has spoken to for this book. Run Like a Girl features amazing women like long-distance swimmer Lynne Cox, shot putter Dame Valerie Adams, soccer star Marta Vieira da Silva, rock climber Sasha DiGiulian, and tennis legend Serena Williams to name but a few – these women have broken world records, achieved world firsts and achieved professional excellence, and their names will live on in history and will inspire new generations of women to go on to break records and barriers.

This book is framed to reimagine and repurpose the pejorative statement, “You run like a girl” – as Danielle says; “You can run like a girl, catch like a girl, and throw like a girl. You can dream like a girl and WIN like a girl.”
