If you have a beginner chapter book reader in your life, you'll want to definitely check out the Aven Green book series by Dusti Bowling.

This book series is about a spunky girl named Aven Green, who even though she was born without arms, doesn't let this handicap stop her from solving mysteries.  Kids will love tagging along with Aven and they try and solve the mysteries, piecing together the pieces until they find out what happened in the end.  And, to keep young chapter book readers engaged, illustrator Gina Perry, includes playful and fun black and white illustrations which really help bring the story to life, and get kids excited to read on to see what happens next.

My two girls really enjoyed both of these Aven Green books, and can't wait for more in the series to be released.  They both love sleuthing books and fell in love with Aven as soon as they started reading the first book.  Aven really is a clever girl, and her sleuthing skills are put to the test when she tries to find her grandmother's missing dog in the first book, and then in the second book, Aven has to work as part of a team if she wants to win the baking competition - but, that is easier said than done. Aven's problem solving and friendship skills will be tested in the book, and it will be up to Aven to work on these skills if she wants to enter the bake-off.

I recommend this book series for 3/4th grade level readers, and will say even the most reluctant of readers will enjoy this book series. The books are easy to read, and the story lines are easy to follow.  The addition of the black and white illustrations that fill the pages of these books really help to keep even the most reluctant reader engaged and having fun reading.   My girls can't wait for more Aven Green books to release, and hope to build a large collection of these books.

About Book 1 in the Aven Green Series:

"Third-grader Aven Green has been solving mysteries for a really long time—a whole month!

She’s solved many important cases like The Mystery of the Cranky Mom, The Mystery of the Missing Ice Cream, and The Mystery of the Smelly Feet. Her record is nearly 100% (only The Mystery of the Cereal in My Underpants remains unsolved to this day). Aven asks all the right questions, wields her detective kit carefully, and follows up on every clue. Then her teacher’s lunch bag (with her lunch still in it) is taken and Aven’s great-grandma’s beloved dog goes missing! Can this perceptive detective crack two cases at the same time? Luckily, Aven has a super-powered brain full of lots of extra brain cells to take on both cases. See, she was born without arms, so all of the cells that were supposed to make her arms went into making her brain instead. At least that’s her working theory for The Mystery of Why I Have So Many Extra Brain Cells.

About Book 2 in the Aven Green Series:

"Third-grader Aven Green has been baking for a really long time . . . since last week!

Now Aven is ready to shake things up by entering the exciting world of competitive baking with her friends Kayla, Sujata, and Emily. Aven knows she’s an expert baker. So what if she doesn’t have arms? That’s just the way she was born. And honestly, she’s a whiz at mixing and measuring with her feet. The one skill Aven hasn’t mastered in the kitchen: working together with her friends. Before long they are fighting over whose dessert is the best. Will adding friends to the mix turn into a recipe for disaster for Aven?"
