I have to thank the Covid lockdown and quarantining for getting both of my girls excited to be in the kitchen cooking and baking. Even though they used to help me prepare tasty treats and meals in the past, it wasn't until we were all stuck together under one roof 24/7, they they started to show interest in making and trying new recipe dishes. We found ourselves alternating kitchen duties, and the girls took the lead 1-2 nights a week to make or bake a dish for the family to enjoy. While it wasn't good for my waistline, it did get the girls comfortable in the kitchen, and even added new menu options to the mix, as both of my girls were picky eaters before Covid, and it was always stressful at dinner time as it would become an open kitchen with me making multiple meals for everyone to be able to enjoy. But, with Covid, we stuck with one dish each night and everyone had to eat it. This was hard at first, but once the girls started to find things they enjoyed making, they would look in cookbooks and online, and find new ways to make a dish or build upon a recipe they were used to making.
Now that the holidays are upon us, I am excited to see my girls asking for cookbooks on their wish lists. They love reading them cover to cover like a book, just like I do. And, they are always ready with sticky note stickers to flag recipes they want to try, when going through a new cookbook. In addition to asking for new cookbooks, my girls are also excited about trying out new cookie and holiday dessert recipes. When they aren't looking through cookbooks or in the kitchen baking or cooking, you will usually find my girls watching one of the many kid-themed cooking/baking shows on television. Both of my girls love the Great British Baking Show, and were excited to learn that the winner, David Atherton, released a cookbook just for aspiring young chefs. His cookbook, has 43 different step-by-step recipes for kids ages 5+ to try out including banana bear pancakes, heart-stopping scones, piggy buns, tasty tacos, and a super fun and tasty cakey caterpillar (see recipe video below).
Before my girls could put this cookbook on their wish list, the kind folks at Candlewick Press surprised them with an advance copy of the cookbook to enjoy. My girls were all smiles when they got their hands on this kid's cookbook, and were quick to flag almost every one of the 43 recipes to try. And, for the past week, they have been taking turns making some of the recipes to serve up for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A family favorite has been the banana bear pancakes, which will now become a staple every pancake Sunday in our house.
My girls have been loving each and every one of the recipes that chef David Atherton has included in his new cookbook for young chefs. And, I have to say, I love seeing my girls gain more confidence in the kitchen as they follow the step-by-step instructions to create each of the tasty dishes they so proudly serve up for us all to enjoy. If you have a young aspiring chef in your life, then I highly recommend you check out the "Bake, Make & Learn to Cook" cookbook by the Great British Baking Show Winner, David Atherton. My girls love this cookbook, and I know your kids will, too!
