As part of our celebration/study this past month for Hispanic Heritage Month, my girls and I took a look a handful of movies and theatrical productions that were written by or starred Hispanic artists. One musical that was a hit with my girls was "In the Heights." And, one of their favorite characters in it was Nina Rosario, played by Mandy Gonzalez. Seeing how they took to Mandy, I thought I would surprise the with a book this brilliant actress wrote, that mixed theater with a little mystery. And, just like with the award-winning musical, "In the Heights", her first book, in what we hope is a long series, "Fearless" became a instant hit with my girls. They loved how she paired two of her loves -- theater and mystery in this middle grade novel, which had them hooked right as they finished the first chapter. This was one of those books they didn't...well, couldn't...put down, as they had to see what happened next. And, once they got to the end, they wanted to re-read it, to see if they missed anything, and just to enjoy this amazing story again.
We have only had this book for a few weeks, but my girls have already read it a few times each. They love how Mandy Gonzalez wrote this book, and had the reader following along, trying to solve the mystery of the haunted theater. If your older children are into thriller and mystery books, then they will definitely want to get their hands on this page turner.
More about this book:
"Better Nate than Ever meets Love Sugar Magic in this spooky middle grade novel from Hamilton and Broadway star Mandy Gonzalez about a group of young thespians who must face the ghost haunting their theater.
Twelve-year-old Monica Garcia has arrived in NYC with her grandmother and a few suitcases to live her dream on Broadway. She’s been chosen as understudy to the star of Our Time, the famed Ethel Merman Theater’s last chance to produce a hit before it shutters its doors for good. Along with her fellow castmates—a.k.a. “the squad”—Monica has a big and very personal reason to want this show to succeed.
But rumors of a long-running curse plague the theater. And when strange and terrible things start to threaten their hopes for a successful opening night, Monica and the rest of the squad must figure out how to reverse the curse before their big Broadway debuts.
With the help of her new friends, her family, and a little magic, can Monica help save the show—and save their dreams? From Broadway and television star Mandy Gonzalez comes a story about what it means to dream, be yourself, and be fearless."
