Usually when I am sent long chapter books and novels to read, I will read through the first few chapters to get a feel for the book and the author's writing style. Eventually I find time to read the rest of the book, after my girls read it on their own and tell me all about. But, with all the books I am sent on a weekly basis, there just isn't enough time in the day for me to sit down and read the all...I wish. Sometimes, though, a book crosses my desk, and as I sit and start reading the first few chapters, I find myself being so captivated by the writing style or the story, that I have a hard time putting it down. I know my girls will read it and spoil the ending...but, there are just some books I want to keep reading and see how it ends. And, with "Blood Like Magic," this was one of those books I just couldn't stop reading. As soon as my husband and girls were sleeping one night, I sat in the living room under a cozy blanket and read this book cover to cover. Even though I hard already read the first four chapters, I had to start over, and get pulled back into this amazing YA fantasy that features an awe inspiring Black teen witch.
If your young adult is into paranormal fantasies and thrillers, they will eat this book right up. From the very beginning, you will be pulled into the story, which is full of heart, magic and witchcraft. Don't worry, I will not spoil the ending or parts in between. I will say, though, I really enjoyed how the author wove the bloodline of family and needing to choose which side of witchcraft Voya had to choose to be on. My girls loved this book just as much as I did, and now have another favorite author to follow. With Halloween right around the corner, this is a great book to pick up and read if you are looking for a little spooky magic to your evening. :-)
