Today marks the beloved family film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory 50th anniversary. Peter Ostrum (“Charlie Bucket”), Paris Themmen (“Mike Teevee”), Julie Dawn Cole (“Veruca Salt”) and Michael Bollner (“Augustus Gloop”) recently sat down together to reflect on 50 years of the perennial family classic. Check it out below...
"Originally released on June 30, 1971, directed by Mel Stuart and starring Gene Wilder as the legendary Candy Man Willy Wonka, this splendiferous movie brings to the screen the endlessly appetizing delights of Roald Dahl’s cherished book. Coated with flavorful tunes and production designs that are a visual treat for the eyes, this effervescent musical never fails to enchant young and old. On a whirlwind tour of Willy’s incredible, edible realm of chocolate waterfalls, elfish Oompa-Loompas and industrial-sized confections, a boy named Charlie (Peter Ostrum) will discover the sweetest secret of all: a generous, loving heart. And viewers will rediscover all the timeless magic as it was meant to be seen."

Wow!, I couldn't believe it when I heard that this movie would be celebrating 50 years today. First, it made me feel old, but, then, I found myself thinking back to when I first saw this movie as kid, and how many more times I have watched it over 40+ years. This movie is hands down my favorite movie and one I will never grow tired of. And, I was excited when I first showed it to my girls when they were 5 and 6 years old, and watched as their eyes lit up with pure joy and excitement with all things magical that Willy Wonka was doing. Both of my girls loved the movie, and continue to watch it on the DVD and Blu-rays we own, and now the new 4K UHD.
Yesterday, I showed the girls the reunion clip, and my youngest who is obsessed with all things Wonka, was so excited to see the characters now 50 years later. She recently found autographs I got as a child from Paris Themmen, who played Mike TeeVee, and she thought that was the coolest thing. When she was talking to her friends last night she was so excited and couldn't wait to tell them about the autographs and how I met Paris and Peter (who played Charlie) years ago.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of this movie, we had a fun themed movie afternoon. I made handmade golden tickets and stuck them inside a candy bar wrapper for them to find, and we had a chocolate fountain going for them to dip fruit and marshmallows in. They colored some fun coloring sheets I found, and we did a reader's theatre, all before settling in to watch this classic and timeless film for the umpeenth time. :-) I really enjoyed watching the bonus content with the girls when the movie was done, which included a commentary with the Wonka Kids and a handful of fun sing-alongs, which got us up off the couch and singing and dancing all around the living room.
We really had a blast celebrating the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory's 50th anniversary, and can't wait to watch this movie again -- which we will probably do tonight as my daughter said she saw it was playing all day on one of the cable channels. Usually when they find it playing on TV, they will sit and watch it..even through commercials.
If you grew up loving this movie and want to share it with your family or replace a disc that is skipping from watching it too many times, now is the time to invest in the newly released 4K UHD version, or the Ultra HD Blu-ray, both of which contain amazing bonus content not to be missed.
