Can you believe it is already fall? Pretty soon we will be setting our clocks back and then the countdown to the holidays begins. It is kind of crazy how we have been cooped up at home all these month, but that time isn't standing still...instead, it is going by so fast! Do you feel the same way? But, I do have to say that with all this self quarantining we have been doing and staying home to limit outside exposure, I have really enjoyed all the extra quality time with my family, including my husband who like many is working remotely for the time being. And, being home means a lot more time for games, movies, and even cooking. My girls have really enjoyed this extra time at home and being in the kitchen especially as they get to try out new recipes they have been meaning to from cookbooks they received last Christmas, as well as having me teach them family recipes and cooking skills that I was taught at their age. We really have been having a blast in the kitchen, and the girls are becoming really good cooks and bakers. And, now thanks to the new cookbook form America's Test Kitchen, "The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs," which released back on October 6th, they have even more recipes to try out and cook up. :-)
Here is more about this recent cookbook release for kids, which joins the best selling series for young and emerging chefs:
"America’s Test Kitchen Kids, one of the country’s most trusted and inspiring cooking brands for kids, is releasing the third cookbook in its acclaimed Young Chefs cookbook series - The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs. The new cookbook builds on the success of the series’ first two titles—The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs and The Complete Baking Book for Young Chefs—which spent a combined 86 weeks atop The New York Times best seller list. Filled with over 100+ meticulously tested and kid-approved recipes, The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs is the ultimate do-it-yourself cookbook that will change the way kids think about their favorite foods.
With the launch of The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs, America’s Test Kitchen Kids goes back to basics, showing kids how to create common store-bought items at home. From everyday must-haves like American Cheese and Ketchup to delicious treats like Strawberry Pop Tarts and Cheddar Fish Crackers, each recipe in The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs encourages creative young chefs to recreate familiar foods from scratch.
Like all content published by America's Test Kitchen Kids, every recipe featured in The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs was tested by over 7,000 kid testers, ensuring that all recipes are unique yet attainable. The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs highlights chapters dedicated to Everyday Staples, Sweets, Drinks, Snacks, and DIY Mixes. The recipes within—like Ranch Tortilla Snack Chips or DIY Hot Cocoa Mix—are great for any occasion, from an after-school snack to homemade gifts for the holidays.
The carefully selected recipes are perfect after school or even Halloween activities designed to incorporate STEAM lessons and life skills that build kids’ confidence, helping to make kids kitchen heroes one DIY project at a time. Each recipe clearly presents instructions with accompanying photos so kids of varying skill levels can succeed with ease. The cookbook also dives into the “how’s and whys” of cooking, while providing recipe customizations that allow kids to experiment and truly make dishes their own."

We received this new cookbook last week, and the girls have already make a handful of recipes each -- from DIY Hot Cocoa Mix that we enjoyed just this evening as we settled in to watch some Halloween movies, to a chocolate layer cake with homemade vanilla frosting that my oldest made on Friday. She wanted to try out the recipe to see if her sister liked it, as she wants to make her a customized birthday cake for her upcoming November birthday, as her gift to her. My girls love giving homemade gifts when it is someone's birthday or for the holidays, so it was nice to see her talk with her sister earlier in the week about her idea of making her birthday cake this year. And, when she saw the chocolate cake recipe in this cookbook, she knew she found the perfect gift to give, as my youngest loves chocolate and was wondered she wouldn't be able to get a cake with Covid going on, and many local mom and pop bake shops temporarily closed.
In addition the frosted chocolate cake and the hot cocoa mix, my girls also made bagel and pita chips to snack on, as well as their own strawberry pop tarts. Once we all tried these homemade pop tarts, we agreed that we will never buy the boxed ones again. They were so simple to make and were fun to frost and add sprinkles to. :-) I loved hearing my oldest daughter telling her sister to not go skimpy on the sprinkles, as everything tastes better with sprinkles. And, now that they can make their own homemade sprinkles -- yes, you read that right! -- they will not run out, as this was another fun recipe found in this new cookbook, that they love to make. They made another batch of sprinkles this weekend as they wanted to have an ice cream movie night, without everyone made from scratch. :-)
I love seeing my girls getting excited about being the kitchen and watching them smile when they pull their creations out of the oven, or remove it from the stove top. They really are proud of themselves, and I love seeing them create a recipe and then come up with other ways to put their own personal touches on them or the dish. Who knows, maybe one day they will open up a bakery or restaurant together. If not, at least they will know how to cook and be able to make simple and elegant meals and desserts, thanks to all the training they are getting at home with the recipes I am passing down to them, as well as the ones they are learning from amazing cookbooks for young chefs like this one from America's Test Kitchen.
I can't wait to see what new recipes the girls try out this week from "The Complete DIY Cookbook for Young Chefs." Their goal is to make each and every recipe in this cookbook before Christmas. Now, if I only had a personal gym in my house, as I can't help but offer to be a taste tester to them. :-) With the holidays fast approaching, why not consider picking up this new cookbook to gift to that special young chef in your life. My girls are really enjoying this cookbook, and love how it is written in simple wording for kids of all ages to understand, as well as filled with full color pictures of each and every recipe. You can learn more about this and other great cookbooks for young chefs by visiting America’s Test Kitchen Kids. They even offer a fun Young Chef's Club, which you can learn all about over at www.ATKKids.com.
