The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Residential Care

Once your elderly parent reaches a certain age or their health starts to deteriorate, you may need to consider the possibility of residential care. There are numerous reasons why this might be the right step. However, the main concern is that they can no longer live safely by themselves in their own home. This could be the case if you constantly find that they are suffering injuries and accidents. It’s important to note that there are both benefits and issues with residential care homes. Let’s explore some of the possible factors to keep in mind here.

Pros

A big pro of residential care homes is that your parents will be around people their age. They will be able to interact and socialize in an environment that is safe and designed for their benefit. This does make it less likely that they are going to develop certain mental health issues and that does include depression. It can also keep them more active and improve their motor skills which will lead to a greater level of independence.

Another benefit is that they can receive round the clock care. That can be highly beneficial for elderly parents who have significant medical issues or concerns. This could include the signs of dementia or potentially something like a stroke.

A residential care home is also going to be less of an issue for you than the possible alternatives. This includes bringing an elderly parent to live with you or even moving in with them. Either possibility is going to put a lot of pressure on your life. It will also impact the lives of your family members too and that’s probably the last thing that you want. With residential care, you can continue in your role of the son or daughter rather than becoming the carer yourself.

Issues

That said there are issues with residential care homes. First, you need to make sure that you are choosing the right option for your needs. It’s important that you don’t end up in a care facility that is not equipped for the requirements of your elderly parent. Unfortunately, not all care homes provide the same level or standard of service and that’s something to keep in mind. There is also the danger of abuse at a care home. That’s why you need to vet your choice carefully. If you do notice signs of this then you will need to contact a law firm that prioritizes client satisfaction. They will be able to ensure that you get the legal support you need for the best possible outcome.

Finally, it is possible that a care home causes the health of an elderly parent to deteriorate more rapidly. If this is the case, it will usually mean that they are not getting the right level of care or support. You should monitor how often they are being seen and how regularly they are interacting with staff. It might simply be worth moving them to another care home that will provide the right level of support.
