Next month is Women's History Month...do you have any special plans to showcase this month with your kids? I am excited as I will be sharing over a dozen new and upcoming picture and chapter books with you over the next couple weeks, that would make for great reads with your kids next month. As you know, I homeschool my girls and try and incorporate national holidays and observations like Women's History Month with them as part of our schooling. This year, the girls will be reading books all about legendary women in history, and then will write a paper about one of the women they read about, sharing more in depth about their chosen woman. Not only will they be working on their researching and paper writing skills, but they will also get to see that there are so many people in our history that have done amazing things. Two women my girls recently learned about, thanks to Nat Geo Kids, were Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony. Nat Geo Kids released two leveled reader books, which are perfect for beginner readers, that did an amazing job of sharing all about these two women, sharing illustrations and pictures throughout the books, that kept the girls engaged and wanting to read on to see what else they would learn about these amazing women.
My youngest daughter is a huge history buff, so she already knew a little about each of these women. But, after reading these two new leveled reader books from Nat Geo, she found herself wanting to read more. She loved how Susan B. Anthony helped with a women's right to vote, and how Harriet Tubman worked as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, then helped slaves, and then helping with equality of women's rights and their right to vote. Both of my girls found these two women fascinating, and loved how they stood up for women and found for women's equality.
These leveled reader books from Nat Geo really are a great way to introduce your kids to famous women in history. And, at under $5 each, you can't got wrong with picking up both to add to your child's book collection, and celebrating along with my girls and I, Women's History Month next month.
