This book got buried under a pile of stuff on my office desk, when the craziness of the holidays set in. It wasn't until I finally got every last product reviewed and featured in my holiday gift guide that I found this book tidying up the papers on my desk. I couldn't help but smile as I read through the cute picture book, which is a debut book by author, Charlie Mylie. Not only was the story short and sweet, with just a handful of words on each page, but the illustrations really do bring this cute story to life, and have you feeling for the mouse as he tries to gather up flowers to bring back to his friends who is sick in bed. And, when the biggest flower he can get his hands on, gets swept away, you can't help but feel for this little mouse, as you know he just wanted to bring back something special for his beloved friend. But, the best part of the book is the last couple of pages, when the mouse is told by his friend that just being her friend is more than enough.
My oldest daughter has been laid up for the past couple of weeks with the flu, before she graciously gave it to me. So, I have been reading lots of books with her and her sister, as she laid on the living room couch to rest and get better. After reading this book on my own, I was excited to share it with my girls, as my youngest was being just like the mouse the other day, trying to find things to make her big sister smile and try and perk up her spirits. She kept bringing her things, but in the end my oldest daughter told her all she wanted was for her to sit with her and keep her company. Yes, all the activity books, toys and get well cards were nice, but she really just wanted her sister's company as she laid on the couch. When my youngest daughter heard this, I think she was a little relieved as she was running out of ideas of what to bring her sister, but also that she knew that just being with her was enough. And, after that, they sat and watched some of their favorite movies and shows and just enjoyed being together. A few days later my oldest daughter started to feel better and got up from the couch to play with her sister, which was nice to see.
When I read this book to the girls, they both smiled, as they could relate to the story, as it recently played out with them. If you are looking for a cute picture book about friendship, then I highly recommend this cute book. My girls have had me read this book a handful of times to them so far, and have also pulled it from the bookshelf to read on their own, too. They always walk away from reading or listening to the book with a smile on their face, and in good spirits, as this is truly a heartwarming story about friendship worth reading, time and time again.
More about this book:
"Something for You is a touching picture book about lending a hand and the gift of friendship, from debut author-illustrator Charlie Mylie, whom Brian Selznick has heralded as “a major new talent in children's books.”
A mouse’s friend is sick. What can he do to help her? He’ll go get her something! But what? Something little? Something to share? Or something just for her? When his search doesn’t go as planned, our mouse realizes that the best gift to give is something he’s had all along.
With expressive characters, sweeping landscapes, and spare text, Charlie Mylie’s debut is a charming story of the comforts that friendship can bring."
