Kick Off the First Week of Your Family's Holiday Book Advent with These Six Books from Abrams Books (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent review copies from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

My girls are counting down the days until Dec. 1st gets here -- only 6 days away!  When Dec. 1st hits, they get to unwrap their first Christmas-themed book to read together as a family, snuggling up on the couch, as we count down the days to Santa's arrival. As I have shared in past posts, we started doing a book advent countdown a few years ago, along with a holiday movie advent.  This is something the whole family can be involved in as we gather up all our Christmas-themed books and movies in early December, and add some of the new ones I was sent to review, and then the girls get to pick their top 5 each, and I pick the rest as a surprise. Then, I wrap each book and put them in a basket next to the tree.  Each night starting on Dec. 1st, the girls take turns grabbing a book to unwrap, and we will sit together on the couch and read it together.  Then, we follow up with a holiday movie.  This is a great way to end each evening, and gets everyone in the holiday spirit, as we count down to Santa's arrival.

This year the girls have chosen a handful of books from the recent releases we were sent from Abrams Books to include in our family's holiday book advent.  I wanted to share some of the books that we will be including, as well as some of the other releases that would make for a great addition to your family's book advent.  If you are looking for a new holiday tradition to start with your family, I highly recommend starting a book or movie advent if you haven't already.  You probably have lots of holiday-themed books laying around that you can wrap and share, as well as pick up some new ones including some of the new releases from Abrams Books below...

My Thoughts:

This is a truly stunning book, and one that would make for a great gift idea for families this holiday season.  I like how the book has pop up ornaments, and then becomes a fully decorated Christmas tree as you read the classic "The Twelve Days of Christmas" lyrics.  My girls really enjoyed this book and liked the addition of the metallic gold ink detailing added to the illustrations of this pop up book.  I plan to put this book out on the coffee table in our living for family and friends to enjoy, and know that once they slip the jacket off this book that they will fall in love with it just as much as I did the first time I read and flipped through this book.

My Thoughts:

Just reading the title of this picture book made my two girls giggling, and want to read it.  It was so much fun reading this humorous story about vegetables in festive holiday underwear.  But, the illustrations really made this a hit with my girls, as they lingered on each page, taking in all the detailing of the illustrations, as they giggled and smiled at the different vegetables including a radish, corn, turnip, pea, and broccoli, to name a few who show up at the end of book in their undies. :-)  We had to include this book to our book advent, and I can't wait to read this book again with my girls, and know it will be one book they look forward to for years to come.

About this book:

"A counting book that highlights the wonders of winter

It’s wintertime! The time for snow, mittens, and 12 days of surprises. In this high-energy, curious classroom, the teacher introduces her students to a new winter activity every day—from making paper snowflakes, to building sugar cube igloos, to playing with jingling bells. As the days get colder and the gifts add up, the classroom is transformed into wintery chaos. Inspired by the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” this book uses accumulative verse as readers count to 12 along with the class and explore the funny, intricate illustrations. It includes a punch-out snowman paper doll that young readers can dress up and use to decorate their own winter wonderland!"

Once you read this book with your kids, you will see why my girls and I loved it, and can't wait to read it again as we count down to Christmas and welcome in the winter season.

My Thoughts:

This was one of my favorite books and one that I chose to include in our holiday book advent. I don't know about you, but I love treasury books, especially ones that include holiday stories, songs, recipes and more, just like this one.  My girls and I practiced our caroling with all the wonderful and classic Christmas songs that fill the pages of these books, and even flagged a few of the recipes to try out and share with family and friends who come to visit.  My oldest daughter wants to make the shortbread recipe in the book and enter it into the holiday cookie/dessert contest at our library.  She said most kids will be doing cookies, and she will surprise the judges with this delicious shortbread recipe. :-)

When we weren't singing Christmas songs, or marking recipes to try out, the girls and I enjoyed reading the different holiday stories and poems that fill the pages of this holiday treasure.  There are playful full-color illustrations throughout the book that add a touch of elegance to this treasury and make flipping through the pages of this book to enjoy all that is has to offer, that much more enjoyable.  If you are looking to add a few new holiday books to your family's book collection this year, I highly recommend this one.  This is one treasury book we will enjoy this year and for many more Christmas' to come.
