The story of a Dog's Purposes continues with the release of A Dog's Journey, which arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and On Demand tomorrow. We fell in love with Bailey when we saw the first movie in theaters, and were so excited when we learned there would be a second film in the franchise. We made sure to clear our schedule for its release in theaters, and went with tissues in hand...and, boy did we need them, especially my youngest daughter and I, who tear up at all the sad and heartwarming movies we see.
In this new installment, Bailey has a new mission, to protect Ethan's granddaughter, who is taken away by her mom, who is not stable, and takes the granddaughter away as she doesn't like to be told how to raise the little girl, or that she also needs to grow up, after losing the girl's father. This heartbreak sets the stage for the rest of the movie, which is filled with joy, laughter, and more heartache. This movie sure does pull at your heartstrings, and you find yourself wishing that Bailey can track down the granddaughter and bring her home to the farm where Ethan and Hannah are waiting and hoping for her return.
Bailey eventually finds CJ, and the movie does have a happy ending. In addition to the heartwarming story of love and how friendships can transcend lifetimes, this movie also has some new dogs that Bailey finds himself brought back as. There is Molly, the beagle who is there for CJ during her upbringing, and then my personal favorite Big Dog, who takes a liking to CJ when she passes through a town and stops to get gas. She comes in and Big Dog realizes his mission, and he sets out to find CJ, after she leaves the gas station. Max, is the cutest Yorkie terrier that CJ meets at a local park dog rescue event. Max yelps and barks to get CJ's attention, hoping she takes her home, so that "Bailey" can continue his mission of protecting CJ.
Through twists and turns and ups and downs, this movie brings you along on Bailey's journey to protect CJ, and be her faithful companion. You can't help but smile and perk up when Bailey in reincarnated into these other dogs and crosses paths with CJ, as you hope she will catch on that it is Bailey, sent from Ethan to project her and guide her in life, back to Ethan and Hannah. We saw this movie in theaters when it first released, and have been patiently waiting for its release to DVD and Blu-ray, so that we can watch again. And, the other night for our family movie night we watched A Dog's Purpose. I cried again, just like I did in the theater, but ended with a smile on my face as the credits rolled. If you loved A Dog's Purpose, and have not had a chance to see the second installment, you definitely have to pick up this movie on DVD or Blu-ray when it arrives it stores tomorrow. Out of the two movies, I have to say that this one is my favorite. I could watch it over and over, and so could my girls, who can't get enough of Bailey.
Be sure to leave time to watch all the great bonus content included with the Blu-ray and DVD releases, including deleted and extended scenes, feature commentary, and so much more.
More about this upcoming release:
"Picking up where A Dog’s Purpose left off, A Dog’s Journey, available on Digital on August 6, 2019, as well as on Blu-rayTM, DVD and On Demand on August 20, 2019, continues the tale of lovable farm dog Bailey, as he finds a new destiny and forms an unbreakable bond, and learns that some friendships transcend lifetimes. A hit with audiences, who rated it an “A” CinemaScore, the movie is “a must-see for any dog lover” (Chuck Yarborough, The Plain Dealer) and the perfect choice for family viewing, teaching universal lessons about the values of friendship and devotion. “Pawsitively” uplifting from start to finish, A Dog’s Journey features over 30 minutes of bonus content including deleted and extended scenes, a hilarious gag reel and featurettes with the cast and a behind the scenes look at the memorable animal performances.
Bailey (voiced again by Josh Gad; Beauty and the Beast, Frozen) is living the good life on the Michigan farm of his former “boy” now grown to manhood, Ethan (Dennis Quaid; A Dog’s Purpose, I Can Only Imagine) and Ethan’s wife Hannah (Marg Helgenberger; “C.S.I.,” “Under the Dome”). He even has anew playmate: Ethan and Hannah’s baby granddaughter, CJ (Kathryn Prescott; “24: Legacy”). Everything is great on the farm until CJ’s mom, Gloria (Betty Gilpin, Isn’t It Romantic, “GLOW”), decides to take CJ away and chase her own fulfillment in the big city. Ethan asks Bailey to watch over CJ wherever she goes and thus begins Bailey’s adventure through multiple lives filled with love, friendship and devotion as he, CJ, and CJ’s best friend Trent (Henry Lau; Internationally famous pop star) experience joy and heartbreak, music and laughter, and few really good belly rubs.
Directed by Emmy winner Gail Mancuso (“Modern Family”), A Dog’s Journey is produced by Gavin Polone (A Dog’s Purpose), and written by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon, and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky, based on the best-selling novel by Cameron.
