I have mentioned in previous posts how the girls are getting a little break from homeschool and are getting the summer off this year.  Usually we homeschool year round, but I thought I would switch things up before they start 5th grade at the end of August, and enjoy quality time together outdoors, and taking advantage of the warm summer weather. Even though we are not sitting down to do school work daily, doesn't mean they still aren't learning and doing school in some fashion.  Shh, don't tell them that! :-)  They are currently doing the local school library reading program and have a little competition going between my two girls to see who can read the most books by the end of summer.  Right now they are neck and neck and have read over 50 books since they started the beginning of June.  This year's summer reading program has the theme of Outer Space, so many of their free programs and classes center around space and astronauts. This is fitting because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first moon walk.  I am using the programs from the library, as well as different space-themed books and movies, to help celebrate this important milestone in our history.  

During our homeschooling this past year, both of my girls really got into the space themed lessons I planned out. We ended up extending our week long space study into a full month, as the girls really got into it and wanted to learn all about the solar system, planets and famous astronauts and space missions.  So, I knew once the library program started for summer that the girls would be excited to read more space books and participate in the different activities and programs. 

In addition to reading, the girls have also been watching different space-themed movies, which they have borrowed from nearby libraries, as well as watched ones I have been sent to review. One movie that was an instant hit with my whole family was the upcoming SPACE STATION original film, which is set to be released on July 9th, in advance of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo mission.  This film really got my girls up close and personal to to a realistic space experience.  

The film is narrated by Tom Cruise, who shares challenges, setbacks and triumphs surrounding the Space Station laboratory which has been set up in outer space.  I am always in awe of IMAX movies like these, and this film didn't disappoint.  Like I said, everyone in my family enjoyed this original film, as well as all the bonus content, and we have a new appreciation for the International Space Station, as we watched crew members at work, doing their day to day routines like exercising, eating, shaving, etc. in Space.  My girls now want to one day travel to Outer Space and feel weightlessness.  For now, they will just have to take watching this movie over and over again, as they dream about life on other planets, and what it would be like to do research in outer space, and live there day in and day out.
