I have always loved books -- not just the smell of the books, but also how they can transport you magical places, just by letting your mind wander as you read a good book.  And, when I decided to homeschool my girls, I found myself falling in love with all the different picture books and educational books I would find in stores and online.  If I had a huge house, I would have a library filled with all these wonderful books for my family to enjoy. And, one book that would be front and center would be the recent release from Jessie Hartland, "Our Flag Was Still There."  This picture book is the true story of Mary Pickersgill and the Star-Spangled Banner, and is written and illustrated in such a beautiful and fascinating way.  This truly is a remarkable book, worthy of owning and enjoying with your family time and again, as it gives the back story of how the American flag came about, as well as the story of the poem that has since become our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Being a homeschool family, I have shared a handful of books about the American flag and the Star-Spangled Banner with my girls, as part of our schooling.  But, this book is by far my favorite as it chock full of information about the flag and poem, making it a great educational read.  Its illustrations are also stunning and really bring this true story to life.  I shared this book with my girls the other day, after receiving a copy in the mail.  As we started to read the story, the girls found themselves lingering on each page, to take it in all the details of the illustrations done by Jessie Hartland.  Even though my girls had already learned about the flag and poem, they found themselves learning so much more as we read through the pages of this well-done picture book.  And, when we were done reading it, the girls couldn't wait to share all that they learned from the story with my husband when he arrived home from work.  My husband thought the girls had spent a whole day learning about the American flag, Mary Pickersgill and the Star-Spangled Banner through schooling.  But, then the girls showed him the book, and he flipped through the pages, he was amazed at how this book captured so much information on the topics and how the girls were able to grasp so much of the information and share it with him.

The girls really enjoyed this book, and learned a lot.  Since then, they have continued to learn more and more about the American flag and the poem that became our national anthem, and are asking to take a trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, so that they can see the flag in person.  I guess we will be planning a road trip field trip soon., as I would love to see the massive American flag on display, too!

If you are looking for a wonderful picture book to share with your kids over the summer, that is not just enjoyable to read, but also educational as well, then you will want to pick up Jessie Hartland's, "Our Flag Was Still There," available now. I highly recommend it, especially for American history studies for homeschoolers, and am so glad to add this to our growing book collection.

More About This Book:

"“So much to like about this, including the folk art–style artwork with childlike appeal, the emphasis on the women who constructed the flag, and the important ways a symbol can influence a country for generations.” —Booklist (starred review)

From beloved author-illustrator Jessie Hartland comes a whimsical nonfiction picture book that tells the story of the American flag that inspired the poem and our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

If you go to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, you can see a massive American flag: thirty feet tall and forty-two feet long. That’s huge! But how did it get there? And where did it come from? Well…

The story of this giant flag begins in 1812 and stars a major on the eve of battle, a seamstress and her mighty helpers, and a poet named Francis Scott Key. This isn’t just the story of one flag. It’s the story of “The Star Spangled-Banner,” a poem that became our national anthem, too.

Dynamically told and stunningly illustrated, Jessie Hartland brings this fascinating and true story to life."
