Does dad love outdoor sports, or trying something new?  If you answered, "Yes" to either question, have I got a great product for an outdoor sport that is taking the world by storm...well, not really, but it has grown in popularity, and more and more people (adults and kids) and getting into this active sport, and having a blast.  I am talking about Disc Golf.  "Huh, what is that?" you ask.  OK, let me try to explain. :-)

What is Disc Golf?:

Disc golf is a flying disc sport, using a disc (similar to a Frisbee, but heavier), in which players take turns throwing a disc at a target.

Played outdoors and following rules similar to golf, people take turns throwing discs on a course of 9 or 18 holes.  Still not getting it?  Learn more about Disc Golf here

"With Spring time here, Disc Golf is the perfect sport to enjoy the outdoors as actively as you want. It's a great game for parents to play with their kids outside, and can be played at any level, with courses nearly in every city of America. For a few dollars, parents can obtain a few discs and spend some time with their children outside.

Disc Golf is incredibly fun while enjoying the outdoors together as a family or with friends. It can be competitive but usually is not. Children can become really passionate about playing disc golf and will want to spend less time in front of screens."

Last year, a nearby recreational area created a disc golf course for the community to enjoy. They have since had a few demo days where people can come out, learn about the game, and give it a try.  My husband took my girls to the park last month for a hike, and they stumbled upon a group playing disc golf.  The girls were curious and wanted to try it, so my husband brought them back to the park the following week as they were having another "demo" day, for them to learn more.  After the first few disc throws, both of girls, as well as my husband were hooked.  When they came back after the demo day, disc golf was all they were talking about.

My husband did more research online, to learn the rules of the game, as well as check out the discs needed to play.  He found that they had disc golf sets for beginners, intermediate and pros, as well as ones for kids and adults.  It was a little overwhelming, looking at the different sets, and trying to figure out which product was the best, especially for my girls to use, along with my husband, who was a beginner.  Around the time my husband was learning more about disc golf, I received an email from the folks at Kestrel Outdoors.  They were reaching out to see if I wanted to review and feature their Disc Golf sets as part of my Father's Day gift guide.  I couldn't help but laugh and smile as I read the email, as I knew that this was the perfect gift for my husband, and I had three eager and excited people in my house who were itching to get back outside with their own disc golf sets to practice a new sport, they had fallen in love with.

I reached out to the folks at Kestrel Outdoors, and described my needs -- needing a set for kids to use, and hopefully my husband who was a disc golf beginner could also use.  They recommended I go with the beginner Disc Golf Set will work for both children and adults. And, within a few days, I had received the beginner set in the mail, shipped direct from Amazon.

(Intermediate Set  are also available through Amazon and the Kestrel Outdoors Website)

As soon as my husband and girls saw the 3 DISCS (Includes Fairway Driver, Mid-Range and Putter) + Disc Golf bag to store the discs in, they were all smiles, and couldn't wait for the weekend to come so that they could head to the park and try out their new disc set.

After reading more about the ins and outs of the game, as well as watching tutorial videos together, come Saturday, my husband and girls were ready to go play disc golf.  I had an appointment so I was not able to see them practice, but my husband took a lot of photos and videos, and they even met up with another homeschool family who was practicing.  They learned that there was a homeschool group that meets weekly to practice and then play against each other at the end of every month. Hearing this my girls got excited, as they were hoping to make more friends, who had similar interests like them.  After telling some of their friends about disc golf recently, none of them knew what it was, or showed any interest in playing, which was a little disheartening to my girls. But, they had my husband as part of their team, and with a little sweet talking, they knew they could get me to join them. :-)

We have had Kestrel's beginner disc golf set for a couple of weeks, and whenever my girls get a chance, they are out in the back yard practicing, or asking my husband to take them after dinner to the park to practice with the golf baskets you are supposed to throw the discs into.  They did get me intrigued and wanting to give disc golf a try, so this past Sunday I went to the park with them, and tried disc golf for myself.  Now, I am not a golfer, and miniature golf is not one of my best sports, but I have the skill of throwing a Frisbee straight, so that helped! :-)  We ended up spending a few hours at the park playing disc golf, and enjoying quality time as a family.  Who knew that disc golf could be so much fun, and also a workout, as you have to walk to the different spots along the 9 (or 18) holes course.

Maybe with a little practice I will get as good as my girls and husband are getting.

Either way, I am now looking forward to the weekends just like them, so that we can head to the park and play a little disc golf, share a few laughs (usually at poor throws and misses), and are making some great memories.  This is definitely the summer of disc golf in our house, and I am loving it!

If your family plays disc golf, or you are looking for a new sport to get involved in that has you outdoors and being active, why not give disc golf a try.

Look up online and see if you have disc golf courses near you.  You will be surprised, as was I, at just how many courses are near you, and that there are actually kids and adult teams and tournaments.

This really is a competitive sport, but also fun at the same time.  And, once you are ready to dive into disc golf and need your own set of discs, make sure you check out Kestrel Outdoors.

We are loving our beginning set, and you can't go wrong with the price of $22.58, to try out a new sport, that your family (both kids and adults) will find they enjoy and want to play whenever they can.
