Winter is here, and with that comes snow days and the dreaded sick days. It seemed liked for the whole month of December our whole house was sick. We started with the stomach bug that was going around, and then managed to pick up the nasty head cold at the pediatrician's office, that lingered for weeks. Everyone in the house was battling one illness (or both) during December, and it was definitely no fun...especially all the laundry and cleaning that was done to keep the germs away. I felt like I had two babies again in the house with the 2-3 loads of laundry a day, and then up and down with the girls all night. Thankfully, we have turned a leaf and January is off to a better start. No more illness, and I am crossing my fingers it stays that way.
As you can imagine being stuck in the house for the month, my girls were going stir crazy. Even with all the new toys Santa brought, they still found themselves bored at times and looking for things to do. Thankfully, Nana saved the day by dropping off a box filled with old Highlights magazines she had bought at a rummage sale, for the girls to enjoy. I first introduced my girls to Highlights a few years back when I signed them up for the monthly magazine subscriptions to the door. Each month when the magazines would come, we would snuggle on the couch and read the stories, before grabbing pens to complete all the fun puzzles, including the Hidden Pictures puzzles. I loved seeing the girls get excited when they found the "banana" and other tough to find hidden objects. And, our Highlights magazine time let me relive my childhood, as I was a huge fan of these puzzle magazines and books, and would look forward to new magazines to arrive each month, and then spend hours enjoying the stories and puzzles, with my mom.
My girls went through the entire box of Highlights magazines my mom brought to keep them busy, and they were definitely a life saver. They would lay on the couch or in their bed and flip through the magazines looking for fun things to do, with pen in hand. :-) Even after they started feeling better, they continued to enjoy these magazines, and asked for more. I ended up signing them pack up for a Highlights magazine subscription through a great Groupon deal. While they wait for their monthly puzzle magazines to arrive, they are enjoying a new Photo Puzzle Mania! book we were recently sent from the folks at Highlights to enjoy.
