In addition to sharing Bertie the Blitz Dog with my girls during our war studies recently, I also stumbled upon and had to share a book by Robert Lodge called "The Dog that Survived the Titanic and Other Amazing Stories." This book includes over 500 incredible yet true stories about animals that have done amazing things.  From a collie named Nipper who shepherded trapped animals out of a burning barn to an elephant who stood up against smoking, this book is filled with uplifting and inspiring books that will touch your heart and remind you that animals are truly amazing creatures. They are not only cute, but many are courageous and will do anything to protect the ones they love.

Knowing how much my girls loved learning about Sgt. Stubby and watching the movie, and then reading the Bertie the Blitz Dog book, I knew that this book which is written in snippet form, would really go over well with the girls.  I wasn't expecting them to remember all the stories of the 500 animals featured in this book, but I hoped it would spark their interest in learning more about a few of these heroic animals. After reading this book, the girls put together a list of the animals they read about, and we went to the library to see if we could find more books about these animals, that would give more insight into them and their heroic stories.  While we didn't find many books about each of the animals, we did find a few, and will be reading them over the next few weeks.  We will also do a little online research to see if we can find out more about the animals that were of interest to the girls. They are hoping to see actual photos of the animals and see if they can find books that we can look for or order, and are talking about making a collage style poster to bring to an upcoming "Show and Tell" for homeschoolers, and share about some of the incredible but true animal tales they read about in the book, and found further information through researching, on.

If you love reading inspiring books about animals, then you will want to check this book out.  Kids and adults will find the short tales interesting, and have a new found appreciation for animals and the amazing and courageous things they can and have done.

About this book:

"Inspired by the story of Rigel, the Newfoundland dog who not only survived the Titanic disaster by treading water for over three hours but also saved the lives of a number of the ship's passengers when his barking alerted the rescue ship Carpathia, this book is an uplifting collection of amazing but true animal tales. From the moving and miraculous, heart-warming and hilarious to the cute and courageous, "The Dog that Survived the Titanic and Other Amazing Animal Stories" is the ultimate celebration of amazing animal-related antics. Featuring over 500 incredible stories starring a wonderful assortment of amazing animals, this thrilling collection reveals the wonderful courage, character and cleverness of our animal friends. Animals on their own are capable of some outrageous but add the element of interaction with humans and the list of funny, loving, heroic and downright bizarre just goes on and on."
