Same Kind of Different As Me

Uplifting Drama Debuts on Digital February 6, 2018
and on Blu-ray & DVD February 20, 2018

This weekend was a wash out in regards to weather, as both days it rained. Thankfully I have a handful of DVDs that I need to watch and review, and couple of them came with fun goodies to make for a memorable movie night. One movie that I have eagerly been waiting to see is Same Kind of Different, which stars Greg Kinnear and Renée Zellweger. I missed this movie when it was in theaters last year, and have been waiting for it to arrive on DVD.

Here is more about this movie, in case you were not aware of this upcoming DVD release (arriving on Digital on Feb. 6 and Blu-Ray and DVD on Feb. 20th)...

4 Ways to Make a Difference Based on Same Kind of Different as Me

Based on The New York Times best-selling book, and recipient of the Dove Foundation seal of approval for ages 12+, SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME follows successful art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear, Heaven Is For Real) and his wife Debbie (Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones’s Diary), who seemingly have the perfect life. But when their faith and family are tested, an unlikely bond with a homeless drifter (Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond) leads them on a remarkable journey that forges an everlasting friendship. “Loaded with surprising twists and turns” (Jim Ferguson, KGUN9 ABC Tucson), SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME shows how a simple act of kindness can change everything.

The SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME Blu-ray includes over an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content, including deleted and extended scenes, featurettes, and commentary by director Michael Carney, writer Ron Hall and writer Alexander Foard. The DVD includes the feature film only."

My girls are too young to watch this movie, so I saved it for an at-home date night movie with my husband last night. I did make a point, though, to talk to my girls about the movie and about the different themes of the movie including kindness. And, as the rain fell outside our windows today, we had a fun "Kindness Rocks" party, thanks to the Kindness Rocks party pack we went sent, along with the digital version of "Same Kind of Different as Me".

The kit included some river rocks, base paint, Mod Podge outdoor sealant, paint brushes and acrylic pens.

Do you know about the "Kindness Rocks" movement? I first learned about this movement last summer when my girls and I were walking in a nearby park and found a beautifully painted rock. We flipped the rock over and saw a website written on the back -- http://thekindnessrocksproject.com/home. When we got home we visited the website and learned about this amazing movement, that families all over the world can participate in.

Here is more about the The Kindness Rocks Project, which would be a perfect addition to your family's upcoming "Same Kind of Different as Me" movie night...

"To promote the theme of kindness that is so important in the film as well as celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day (2/17), why not participate in the The Kindness Rocks Project? After you’ve watched the film with your family, you can create rocks with inspirational messages on them to help promote acts of kindness. As The Kindness Rocks Project suggests, you can “take one when you need one, share one with a friend who needs some inspiration, or leave one for another”. Maybe your family will just leave the rocks to be found somewhere and brighten someone’s day or maybe your family can give or leave a rock after providing an act of kindness towards someone. The Kindness Rocks Project provides some suggestions and a how-to guide HERE."

If you are looking for ways to get your family together, that is not only fun but can make in impact in other people's lives, why not consider joining me and so many others for the upcoming National Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17th. I bet you and your family can come up with some great ideas on ways to provide random acts of kindness to people in your community -- either by paying it forward at a local drive-thru window, painting rocks and writing inspirational messages like "Dream," "Never Give Up," and "Hope" on them, and then hide them in a local park for others to find, or other small gestures that will brighten someone's day.

My husband and I loved "Same Kind of Different as Me," and I can't wait for homeschooling friends to watch the digital version on Feb. 6th with their families, and utilize the different online lesson plans and devotionals that were made to go hand and hand with this upcoming Blu-ray/DVD/Digital release. When my girls get a little older I will definitely be sharing this movie with them, which is based on a best-selling book, that is a must read for those who love to read a book and follow up by watching and comparing it to a theatrical release.

Same Kind of Different as Me is a movie that will move you, and have you looking at your life and seeing how you can be better, and how you can do something to better the lives of others, especially those who have fallen on hard times, like the character Denver Moore, in this movie. Like I said, this movie is based on a true story, and the book that this movie is based on sat on the New York Times bestseller list for 3 straight years. It is about the relationship a well-off art dealer, Ron Hall, has with a homeless man, Denver Moore, whom he meets at the mission his wife Debbie made him volunteer with her at. Debbie had a dream one night and it had Denver in it. When she saw Denver at the mission, she knew that she and her husband had to befriend Denver -- even though this was one of those unlikely friendships that took time to cultivate.

After cheating on his wife, Ron was doing all he could to make it up to her and get back into her good graces, even if it meant becoming friends with Denver, who wasn't looking for friends. Ron tried and tried to befriend Denver, until one day he got him to go to dinner with him. And, from that moment on, Denver and Ron became unlikely friends, who would change each others lives. Usually Ron would just write a check and be done with things, but when it came to Denver, he ended up giving himself as a friend, and received the greatest gift he could have ever imagined, a best friend and the very best friendship in the world -- something that money can't buy. Not only did these two men find a friendship that was golden, but Denver found in Ron and Debbie, people who truly cared for him -- which he never experienced before. His mom left him in the care of his bed-ridden grandmother who was battling medical and mental conditions that didn't make her a good candidate to care for Denver and his younger cousin. Then, a house fire to the shack they were living in, killed his grandmother, and sent Denver and his cousin to stay with his Uncle who worked a white man's cotton field. So, Denver was put to work and experienced things like the KKK and racism firsthand. He never felt like he belonged, and he was never truly loved. And, the few friends that he made, didn't work out because of the color of his skin.

The movie is all about the relationship that Ron, Debbie and Denver built, and how this powerful story had to be written down and shared in a book for others to enjoy and be moved by this random act of kindness. My husband and I couldn't take our eyes of the screen, and when the movie was over, we both agree that it was great. We found ourselves talking about the relationship Ron and Denver had, and how together they helped to transform the city and mission into a better place, and provide hope for those less fortunate. Denver was the one who convinced Ron to write the book about their friendship -- one simple act of kindness, that made a big impact not just on Ron and Denver, but everyone around them. It is truly amazing how random and simple acts of kindness can bring change in a positive way. You do one random act of kindness and someone else does one...and in no time we can all be part of a bigger picture as we help to change the world, and remind each other that there is still good in the world and in people.

So, as we get ready to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day on Feb. 17th, why not consider purchasing the digital version (or pre-order the Blu-ray/DVD version) of "Same Kind of Different as Me" to enjoy with your family, and prompt a discussion with your family about ways you can do random acts of kindness together that will provide hope and inspire others. Be sure that you have a box of tissues ready when you watch this movie as it will make you cry both happy and sad tears. And, you will find yourself being moved by this movie, and want to do random acts of kindness, as a way to pay it forward. I can't wait to see what you and family come up with. :-)
