My Thoughts:
When I saw this book on the Skyhorse Publishing website, I instantly thought of Savannah and how much she would like this book. She loves science and is always gravitating towards STEM and other science books when we are at the bookstore. This is a relatively new chapter book series for girls, but is one that should be on your radar, especially if you homeschool, as this would make a great addition to your STEM learning.
What I love about this book how the author draws on STEM themes and aligns with school science curriculum and get readers excited about exploring the world around them. I really how Lucy draws on her surroundings to set up her science lab and explore science topics. In this book, first in the series, Lucy investigates trees and what is happening to them, and most importantly what is going to happen to the squirrels who call the trees their home.
Savannah loves chapter books which have pictures, as it helps her bring the story she is reading to life, and activates her imagination to continue playing out the story in her head. She couldn't stop reading this book, and was so excited to start her own lab so that she could investigate and study things. Just the other day I heard her telling her younger sister who was bored to look around, as there is science all around. She then started talking about this book with her, and then they ended up sitting on the couch for Savannah to read her a couple chapters.
We are almost done with this book, and I have already picked up the second book in this series, which came out in October, to surprise Savannah with. And, when she is done we will discuss what she learned and see if we can apply what she learned to things around us. Savannah and I give this book two thumbs up, and we are so happy we stumbled upon this new book series, and can't wait to read more books and add to our growing Lucy's Lab collection.
