"These stories address many of the values and behaviors we seek to instill in our children. They celebrate the best in the human spirit for our children and ourselves." ~ David Leebron, President, Rice University"
Released back in September, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Raising Great Kids, the third title in the Boniuk Foundation series, is filled with 101 stories about sharing values from generation to generation.
"The Boniuk Foundation and Chicken Soup for the Soul are working together to promote tolerance, respect and compassion, inspiring young people and adults to embrace their differences, reject stereotypes and make good choices. This project is comprised of three separate, but connected, programs: donations of Chicken Soup for the Soul books to schools in Houston and all of Harris County, TX; a new series of Chicken Soup for the Soul books for children and parents; and a Saturday morning television show for families. In addition, Harris County families will receive special access at a reduced price to Chicken Soup for the Soul’s entire online library of books. All of these programs focus on values and use storytelling to encourage young and old to accept and respect people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, and culture - one story at a time.
The personal stories in this collection not only show adult readers how to be their best selves, but also offer great advice on how to raise resilient, confident, upstanding kids — kids who exhibit all the qualities of acceptance, courage, and inner strength. These stories provide practical, insightful tips for parents and grandparents looking to strengthen their families and raise caring, confident, successful children."
I was hoping to get around to this book sooner as it was top on my reading list once I heard it was releasing in September. But, as with life, you are hit with things that throw you off course. From colds to my husband changing jobs and then life getting in the way, I had to put this book aside until I could find time to really read and appreciate the book. This past weekend, I made a point to pencil in time after the girls went to bed, as the time change has made them go bed to earlier as they think it is much later :-), and I spent two hours reading this book from cover to cover.
Like with other Chicken Soup for the Soul books, I found myself highlighting and sticky noting different pages of inspirational stories that stood out and that I wanted to share with family and friends, or just read again for myself. Being a fan of these books, I was happy to read from other parents and even grandparents their stories of how they instill values in today's generation. I wasn't expecting to read this book in one sitting, but after I started reading the first few stories, I couldn't put the book down, and continued until I read the very last page.
Topics dicsussed throughout the 101 inspirational stories that make up this recent Chicken Soup for the Soul release include:
- Thinking Outside the Box
- Learn from the Next Generation
- Stay Positive
- Use the Power of Forgiveness
- Be an Advocate for Acceptance
- Be Kind to Strangers
- Encourage Independence and Responsibility
- Be a Role Model
- Make Time for Forgiveness
As you can see so many great topics are talked about, that will surely open up lines of communication and have you talking with you children about being accepting, respectful, compassionate and kind, in today's day and age. I highly recommend this book for parents and even grandparents to read and share with their children. This is one book I will continue to read and seek inspiration from as my girls grow and mature.
