If you have children, especially young ones, then you have probably downloaded and tried out your fair share of educational apps for them. Both my husband's and my phones are filled with our girls' apps, as are our iPads, and even laptops. But, with all the different apps out there, it is hard to find ones that really provide an educational benefit while also keeping kids engaged and entertained.
I can't tell you how many apps I have bought or tried out for a month or two only to find the girls losing interest after one or a few days. There have been a a few they they stuck with, but I found didn't really contain educational content or at a level that would really challenge them or have them learn -- which these apps are supposed to be made to do. Trying to weed out the good from the bad can be time consuming and at times expensive with the need to buy in-app purchases, or sign up for trials. I have spent time reading other parents' reviews of apps, which has helped with decision making. But, as a busy parent I really wish that I could download one app that I know my girls would love as it is truly engaging...but, that it also teaches them and enforces things they are learning with our homeschool curriculum. Well, I have finally found an app that both my girls and I love, and that I am seeing my girls improve on skills, including learning sight words, letter sounds, etc.
What is the app, you ask? It is called Learn with Homer. Homer is a talking pigeon, who will take your child on a journey all around different worlds learning through fun games, story telling, music and more. I downloaded this app to our laptops and iPads about two weeks ago, and it has become a staple in our daily lesson plan.
Either the girls begin their day with Learn with Homer, or choose to play with this app over watching television after dinner, right before bed. I love seeing the girls get excited for this app and ask for it over television time. And, once I log in, my girls are off and running, not needing my husband or my help.
Here is a video and a few photos I took of the girls the other night exploring and learning with the Learn with Homer app.
Savannah loves completing an lesson and then being rewarded by drawing. She loves to draw cats, like the one she is doodling in the photo above.
Bella is more of the abstract artist :-)
Savannah could spend hours playing around in the music section where she loves to listen to nursery rhymes and other fun songs -- which I have to say are catchy. :-)
Savannah trying to decide which music video to watch and sing along to - decisions...decisions!
Learn with Homer keeps the girls engaged -- from stories to games,
they can't take their eyes off the screen.
Having fun with Learn with Homer
The other night while filming the girls and taking photos for this post, I found myself being amazed at how much Bella has learned, since she started to sit in on my Kindergarten homeschooling with Savannah. There is one part in the first world/level where your child has to choose the correct sight words, like "at," "and" and "a". Without my help or having the narrator say the words, Bella quickly tapped on the correct words. And, in no time at all, she had the fridge filled with the sight words and had completed level 1.
I wish I had captured Bella doing a happy dance while spelling and saying the sight words that they filled the fridge with. And, to prove to her Daddy that she knew the words and it wasn't a fluke, she took out her pencil case and notebook and wrote them down. Savannah followed suit and they sat at the dining room table writing out and saying the different sight words they have learned over the past month of schooling. I was a proud mama and teacher, and loved seeing my husband high five and bear hug the girls, as he saw first hand how much they have learned with school and with this amazing educational program.
Here is more about the Learn with Homer program...
“Originally launched in 2013, Learn with
Homer has engaged more than 1.5 million children worldwide to date. This fall,
it is undergoing a complete reboot, with entirely new navigation and the
introduction of a new interactive themed world, to help families more easily
find the vast amount of learning material.
This groundbreaking early learning
program has been developed by top literacy experts and proven to produce
results (only program for families proven effective by gold-standard research),
is currently available for children ages 3-7 on both the web and iPad. Originally created by education reformer
Stephanie Dua, based on the best teaching practices including Common Core
standards, Learn with Homer uses the latest science on how children learn to
read and build knowledge, to really teach the necessary skills for a successful
reader.
Learn with Homer focuses on the skills
that will predict later academic success for your child. Current “reading” apps assume a child has
already been taught the basics of reading and really just offer practice
drills. Learn with Homer is the first
digital product that teaches children how to read without the need for an adult
to assist them, making it easier for families to help their kids get ahead and
stay ahead.
In addition, Learn with Homer offers an
exceptional array of content for children – more than 1,000 lessons and
activities including stories, games, history, science, art and music. Each part of the learning program has a
specific purpose and these activities reinforce the lessons with real world
context.
Parents can also track their children’s
progress – actually listen to an audio recording of their child’s voice reading
a book-- and look at a Pinterest-like board of their drawings.”
And, before the night was over, my inbox was filled with emails from the moms sharing their feedback and love for the app. Their kids were loving the Learn with Homer program just as much as my girls, and the moms were happy to have finally found an educational program that provided educational content for their child's particular age and learning level.
