See You There!

This September I will be able to cross something off my bucket list, which I first created when I found out I had stage 2 nasopharyngeal carcinoma back in 2008...I will be walking with my family and friends in the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk!  Why am I walking you ask, besides having this as a bucket list item?  For starters, I will be celebrating 7 years in remission this year, and wanted to do something as a thank you to all the doctors and staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, who gave me a new lease on life.  I was told prior to having radiation and chemo treatment that I wouldn't be able to have kids, but by the grace of God I have been blessed with two beautiful and healthy girls, who will also be joining my husband and I on the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.

My girls are still too young to understand cancer, so I haven't brought it up to them. But, when they are old enough, I will be sharing my cancer journey with them and celebrate my survivorship with them, as they mean the world to me, and I am so grateful to be in remission and have the opportunity to be a mom like I had always hoped for. In addition to experiencing cancer firsthand, I have also seen most of my family and some dear friends lose their battle with cancer.  My mom and I are the only ones left on her side of the family, as cancer took everyone else from us.

So, when I head into Boston on September 27th to participate in the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, I will be walking not only as a survivor, but also to honor those friends and family who are no longer with us.

They didn't let cancer win...they just didn't want to live in pain anymore.  It will definitely be bittersweet when I participate in the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, as I have chosen to start the walk at  Dana-Farber, and walk 3 miles to the Copley Square finish area in Boston, where walkers will enjoy live music and food

This is just one of four routes walkers who register for the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai and help Dana-Farber Cancer Institute can chose.  The other starting points include:  Hopkinton, which is a 26.2-mile walk; Wellesley, a 13.1-mile walk and Boston College, a 5-mile walk.

Cancer not only is a battle for your life, but treatment and post care can be really expensive, even if you have good health insurance.  I know as I had health coverage, but spent the past 6 years paying off medical bills from my 2008 treatment.

It may sound crazy, but I feel that I owe the folks at Dana Farber Cancer Institute my life, as they treated my rare form of cancer, and put me in remission.  The least I can do to say "Thank You," is to walk in the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk and raise funds that will go directly to Dana Farber Cancer Institute to help conquer all cancers in both children and adults from all around the world. Will you join me in lacing up and taking steps towards a cancer-free world?  I hope you will!  Make sure you use the following registration coupon code: BLOG - to save $5 off the $25 registration fee.
