Do you have a favorite movie actor? For me it is Kevin Costner. I can't tell you have many times I have watched "Field of Dreams." Each and every time I flip through the channels late at night and it is on, I will stop everything and watch it -- even though I have seen it enough times to recite all the characters lines. But, if you have seen the movie, then you know that it is really good, partly because of the acting of Kevin Costner.
It has been quite some time since I have seen Kevin Costner in a film. Whenever he does show up in a film, he seems to steal the show, like he does in the recent DVD release, "Black or White," which stars Costner as well as Octavia Spence (who had a recent stint on the television series, "Red Band Society" which I loved watching). Like so many theater release movies, this was one movie I was hoping to see on the big screen, but didn't make it to the theater in time. So, it was top on my list of movies to pick up once released to DVD. I was lucky enough to have a review copy sent to me last week from the folks at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. With a house full of people over to celebrate Mother's Day, this was the perfect family movie to sit down and watch together.
As you can see from the trailer, this movie is about a grandfather (Costner) who is left to raise his African American granddaughter after both her mother and biological grandmother pass away. Costner's character has to fight to keep custody of the girl, as both her paternal grandmother played by Octavia Spencer. She is fighting for custody as she feels Costner's character is trying to keep the little girl away from her African American heritage and family, which includes her biological father who is a drug addict.
This movie deals with topics including race, forgiveness and understanding, while also introducing the world to a wonderful new actress worth keeping your eye on (as she is destined for great things) Jillian Estell. Costner's character has to defend himself and his want to keep sole custody of her granddaughter. But, his drinking could cause him to lose his bid for custody.
Everyone in my family absolutely loved this movie and was glad they sat down to watch. This movie is 121 minutes in length, and will keep you engaged from start to finish, and you never feel like the story is slowing down, which I love. While the topics discusses are oftentimes tough to talk about, this powerful movie deals with them in a great job, thanks in part to the wonderful cast. Costner again, in my eyes, steals the show, next to little Eloise, and makes you want to see what happens next. You can't help but root for him to keep his daughter, and have the two families come together and work it out for the little girls sake.
This movie does contain adult language and drug content, so it is not suitable for young audiences. But, older tweens and teens will enjoy it, along with adults. If you are looking for a movie to watch this weekend, I highly recommend Black or White, starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spence. If you are prone to crying, get the tissues ready, as certain scenes will bring you to tears, including when Costner's character admits to his granddaughter that "I am lost." I lost it when I watched this scene, as it really pulls at your heart strings and makes you feel for the characters, and you hope that everything works out for the best.
