PBS KIDS Series Showcases Bright and Curious Girls
Putting Science and Engineering to Work

My girls are still too little to enjoy SciGirls from PBS Kids, but I will definitely be holding onto this and other SciGirls DVD releases to share with them when they get older, as they are great teaching tools, especially for homeschooling families.  Instead of watching this recent DVD release with my girls, I enlisted the help of my 10 and 12 year old nieces to watch this show me.

I was surprised to hear that they were familiar with this show and that my niece's science teacher was sharing an episode as part of a recent science lesson.  Shows like this really get young girls excited about science and technology and show that that girls can also be successful in careers like these that are usually dominated by men.

This DVD filled with 11 hours of STEM lessons that make up two seasons and on 4 DVDs.  In addition, you'll find that this DVD collection contains both Spanish audio and subtitles, which my bilingual nieces loved.  They loved watching each and every episode where they saw girls their age design and investigate, using science and engineering.

I found this to be a wonderful show and one that really is a must see for tweens/teen girls.  My nieces were talking back to the television putting in their two cents about how a design would work or to help solve the different challenges the girls on the show were faced with.

Both my nieces and myself highly recommend this DVD for homeschooling families, tweens/teens and even for entire family's to sit and watch and get excited about the different STEM lessons presented.  And, if you have Amazon Prime, you can find this PBS Kids series there, thus allowing your family to watch the episodes online or streaming through Roku, which I found my nieces do. :-)

More about this recent DVD release:

"PBS Distribution recently announced releasing Seasons 1 & 2 of PBS KIDS’ popular “SciGirls” series on DVD February 3, 2015. The Daytime Emmy-award winning series, produced by Twin Cities Public Television, aims to change the way millions of girls think about science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM.

Meet bright, curious, real tween girls who put science and engineering to work in their everyday lives. In every episode, animated hosts Izzie and Jake face a new challenge. With the help of the “SciGirls’” website, Izzie finds a different team of middle school girls who work with scientist mentors to design their own investigations on a wide variety of topics, from the environment to technology, engineering to nutrition, and beyond.

In Seasons 1 & 2, the SciGirls study dolphins, engineer a giant mechanical puppet, unearth archaeological secrets, create high-tech fashions, and much more. “SciGirls” inspires kids to explore the world around them and discover that science, technology, engineering, and math are everywhere!
