What were you doing this past weekend?  If you live on the East Coast, around the New England area like me, then you were digging out yet again from another snowstorm.
It seems every time we think we will have an easy winter, and there’s no snow real snow until mid-January. Then, we get clobbered.
I have lost count of how many inches we have received - well over 3 feet here in Connecticut! My parents who live in Massachusetts have over 50 inches and are struggling like many to find a place to put all this snow.  Yet with the snow comes snow days, which means the kids are home with nothing do, after they are done playing outside of course.
A few weeks ago, in addition to hosting family and friends for a “Pal'entine's Day” party on Saturday, we also used this time to screen a movie with the kids, Barbie in Princess Power.
The movie is set to release on DVD and Blu-ray this spring, and you can get it here:

Here is more about the movie to give you sense of what you will see...

GET READY TO SOAR!
“Barbie stars as Kara, a modern-day princess with an everyday life. One day, after being kissed by a magical butterfly, Kara soon discovers she has amazing super powers allowing her to transform into Super Sparkle, her secret, crime-fighting alter ego who flies around the kingdom ready to save the day! But it's not long before her jealous cousin catches the butterfly and also transforms - this time into Dark Sparkle, her nemesis. Their rivalry takes to the skies, but when they discover the kingdom's true enemy, can they put aside their differences to form one super team? Soar to new heights and discover that there's no greater power than the power of friendship!"

Both of my girls are huge Barbie fans. Bella, especially loved Barbie: Life in the Dream House and watches it almost every day. Whenever a new Barbie hits movie theaters or arrives on DVD, the girls are in the know and already asking to see it. While I myself grew up playing with Barbie dolls and have even been able to share my collection with my girls, I don't remember watching Barbie movies until I welcomed my girls. I love being able to relive my childhood with them and also see them get excited about toys I used to play with, including Barbie!
When I told my girls that we would be hosting a viewing party to watch this upcoming release, they were over the moon excited. Santa had surprised them at Christmas with the Barbie Super Hero dolls, as well as superhero capes with their initial on the back, so that they too could dress up and pretend to fight crime and rescue people in need -- just like Kara (AKA Super Sparkle) does in this movie.

Available In Stores Now
I hadn't heard about the Barbie in Princess Power movie until recently, when I was asked if I wanted to screen with my girls. I knew that they would be excited to help, and was thrilled when I was given access to watch online with them.
Watching “Barbie in Princess Power” for the second time
So, this weekend, with a house full of kids, we held a screening of Barbie in Princess Power. Within the first few minutes of the movie, the kids were hooked and couldn't move from the television. In the opening scenes, we see Kara flying through the air using a device her two friends created. The kids thought this was the coolest thing, and wished they could fly just like Kara. Then, as the movie progressed, they saw Kara get kissed by a butterfly who transferred magic super hero powers to her.

So… how did the butterfly get superhero powers to start? Prior to becoming a butterfly, it was a caterpillar that had walked through a sewer opening where a magic potion had ben spilled on accident by the king’s assistant, Baron Von Ravendale. He was trying to create a magic potion that he could drink to give him the super powers so that he could claim the throne, which he felt was his.

Thanks to his clumsy and hungry frog, the potion was knocked over and spilled out… leading to the caterpillar walking through it, then emerging into the open sky and becoming a beautiful butterfly with magic powers!

We don't learn of the super hero powers that Kara has, besides being able to fly, until she and her two friends gather in her room to talk. Then, we see what Kara can do, and this is where the real story begins! Kara's superhero powers include being able to fly, lift heavy objects, and make a fireball as well as other cool superhero actions. She wants to put her super powers to good use and sets out to look over the kingdom and its people. Whenever she learns of trouble or someone needing her help, she flies into action and saves the day.
But, you can't have a good super hero movie without a villain or arch nemesis, right?  This movie has both - Baron Von Ravendale, who is plotting to take over the throne and get rid of Kara's family and Princess Corinne, Kara's jealous cousin.
Princess Corinne learns of Kara's secret identity and seeks out the magically butterfly and has it kiss her, turning her into Dark Sparkle. Dark Sparkle wants to have the attention on her and not Kara/Super Sparkle.  When there is a crime or rescue that needs to be made, both Dark Sparkle and Super Sparkle show up.  But, then they fight to claim the spotlight for themselves, forgetting to put the people they are protecting first.
The kids really liked this rivalry in the movie between Dark Sparkle and Super Sparkle and couldn't wait to see how it played out, and if they would put their differences aside to take on the evil Baron Von Ravendale, together. I don't want to spoil the ending, as it really is good, and will have you on the edge of your seat, rooting on Kara to save her family and protect the kingdom.
I will say, however, that the film’s message of family and friendship shines through and is so important for kids to watch. The two princesses learn about the importance of teamwork and not losing sight of goals. For example, in the beginning of the movie Kara wanted to do good by creating a community garden. Yet she lost the drive to do so when she found herself with super powers. She also drifted apart from her two close friends, and they felt this distance and were hurt.

As a parent, I love how the movie ends with sharing the lessons learned by Kara and her cousin and them admitting where they went astray. Both girls learned from their poor behaviors and determined that they would improve and not let these things happen again. What a positive messages for kids of all ages viewing this movie to take away and apply to their own lives!
Everyone who saw this movie at our house this weekend loved it, especially my two superheroes. We even watched it for a second time and can't wait to own it on DVD so that we can add it to our growing Barbie movie collection.
Barbie in Princess Power will have your children wanting to dress up as superheroes and pretending to have super powers just like Kara. I know this to be true as my girls fought with me the past two nights to change out of their superhero costumes to pajamas… as they wanted to be ready to fight crime and rescue those in need, even in their dreams.

If your child is a fan of Barbie or fun superhero movies, then you will want to make a point to watch Barbie in Princess Power when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on March 3rd.  We really had a blast screening this movie, and I have to admit, I loved it, too!  The scenes were colorful and full of fun, and you couldn’t help but wish you had super powers like Kara.  Oh, what I would do if I could fly!
I can’t wait to hear what you and your kids think of this new Barbie movie. It is filled with action and adventure and will have you and your kids wanting to watch it over and over again. It is that good!
