Do you know who this is? Try asking your children and see what their responses will be. They probably have no idea that this is the Hobbit, Bilbo.
I am a child of the 70's and 80's, and grew up watching the animated version of The Hobbit and "The Return of the King" by Tolkien. These movies are classics of children of my generation. Try and ask kids from generation Y about The Hobbit, and they will talk about the non-animated version that blew up on the movie theaters screens, broke box office records and won tons of awards. They probably have no idea before these box office hits of "The Lord of the Rings" movies, that there was a pudgy looking animated character, Bilbo Baggins. Just thinking about these movies, I can't help but smile, as this is what I know of my childhood and love. Even though kids nowadays who sit down and watch the original Hobbit movies will complain about the poor animation, I don't mind it. The songs and stories of Bilbo are great, and will always remain a classic.
So, when I heard that Warner Bros. was releasing The Hobbit and "The Return of the King," on DVD on July 22nd, and how both have been digitally remastered, I got excited. I have lost count on how many VHS copies I have bought over the years, from frequent viewing. Finally, I would be able to get these classic Bilbo stories digitally remastered -- how great is that!
This past weekend I received screener copies in the mail, and had my husband, who had never seen them sit down and watch the two DVDs with me. He only knows of the LOTR books and movies, and had never heard of these 80's animated movies. As he sat and watched the with me, he tried to compare the two. While he loved the effects of the newer LOTR movies, he could see why I and so many other Tolkien fans love the original Hobbit movies.
We had a great time watching them, and I have to say that the sound and picture was crisper and cleaning than what I remembered. I can see these DVDs being great gift ideas for Hobbit/Tolkien fans, or to pick up and share with your children, and let them see what you grew up watching. These movies will remain classics, and with them being released, I can see newer generations falling in love with them, too!
Here is more about the two new DVDs releasing on July 22nd...

ReplyDeleteThis brings back memories! I loved the animated version as a kid. While it's not quite as epic as the new version (which I enjoy too!), I think this would make for a great family movie night.
