My Thoughts:
Usually we wait until the weekend to watch new movies sent to me to review with the girls. But, as soon as the girls saw "The Nut Job" arrive in the mail the other day, they have been asking me off and on each day if we could watch it. Having not seen it when this movie was in theaters, but hearing from friends and family who did, and how they thought this was a great family movie, I have to say that I was a little anxious to also watch it. I finally gave in yesterday afternoon, and watched "The Nut Job" with the girls after they napped. I love how you can bribe your kids to take a nap or eat their lunches with a movie or special treat, don't you? :-)
Like I have shared in past posts about animated movies, I love when popular actors and actresses lend their voices, as it makes it more fun for adults watching these kid-friendly movies. Stars lending their voices in this cute film included Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, Katherine Hiegl, Brendan Fraser, Gabriel Iglesias and Jeff Dunham. A great mix of talented voice, right? I sure think so.
With many of the voice talent having a comedic background, you knew you were in for a treat when watching this movie. From start to finish the girls and I were laughing and smiling along, as we watched Will Arnett's character, Surly the squirrel, try to find and stock up on nuts for the winter. When he stumbles upon a nut shop with a basement full of nuts, he thinks he has hit jackpot. Surly only likes to think about himself. So, when he realizes that the nut shop is actually owned by bank robbers who are planning a heist of their own, he has to reach out to those he would otherwise ignore for help in preventing the planned bank heist and save the day.
When you have squirrels, rats, raccoons and other furry and four legged friends coming out of the woodwork to help, you know you are in for an adventure to say the least. Kids will laugh at squirrels farting and the jokes being told amongst the characters, and parents will, too. My girls couldn't stop getting up and dancing around during the dance scene and other cute parts throughout the film.
The film is only 85 minutes in length, making it a great length for children of all ages, including young ones to sit through and enjoy, without growing restless. There is some animated violence where the characters are hitting each other or crashing into things, but nothing that would terrify your kids.
My girls fell in love with Surly and the others, and loves the bright colorful scenes and animation. And, when they were giggling at the funny comments or mishaps of the characters, I loved how this movie had themed like the importance of friendship, teamwork, treating others with respect and kindness and coming together as a community to tackle a problem, where in this case it was trying to stop the bad guys from robbing the local bank, while also pulling off a massive nut heist of their own.
I can see the girls asking to watch this movie again today, and have it be one that it brought in the car or asked for on movie nights. And, I will not say "No" as I enjoyed it just as much as they did. "The Nut Job" is a great family movie that will have you laughing and cheering on Surly and his friends as they try to save the day. So, if you are looking for a cute movie to share with your family for your next movie night, why not consider picking up a copy of "The Nut Job" when it arrives on Digital HD on April 8th, and in stores on Tuesday, April 15th. I can't wait to hear what you think of it.
