Does your family live a "green" lifestyle? Or, do you at least try to? Like I have shared in the past, I made the switch to a more "green" way of living after being diagnosed and treated for cancer in 2008. Out went the strong smelling chemical cleaners and other hazardous products we had laying around the house, and in came more Eco-friendly products. In addition to switching household cleaning products, my husband and I also started paying more attention to the trash we create on a weekly basis and improving our recycling habits.
Prior to moving into our home, we used to live in a condo complex for over 4 years. They didn't have a recycling program in place, so we grew accustomed to just throwing everything in the trash bin, which then went into the complex's trash container. I used to always comment to my husband about how a 20 unit building create so much waste, and how we could cut down on the number of times the trash company came to pick up our trash, which at the time was twice a week, if we were recycling. But, when we would bring up the suggestion to the condo association, we would always get shot down, as people didn't have the time or money to buy extra containers to put their recyclables in. I told my husband that when we moved into a home of our own, that we would definitely be recycling. Not only did I want to help the planet, but I also wanted to create less trash that we would be throwing out on a weekly basis. Another push to recycle is the fact that we have to $1.00 per bag of trash (30 lb. max per trash sticker placed on each trash bag at the curb). In the beginning we noticed the trash bags adding up. But, having lived in a complex that didn't recycle for so long, it was a challenge to recycle.
This Earth Day, however, things changed. As a whole, my husband and I, along with the girls help, made a promise to ourselves and the environment that we would recycle -- no if's, and's or but's about it. :-) We turned recycling into a game, by teaching the girls which bins were used to store certain recyclables, like plastics, glass, paper, etc. You should have seen how much fun the girls had. Who knew that recycling could be so much. :-) And, now whenever my girls see my husband or I throwing out something that should be recycled, they stop us, and point to the bin it is supposed to go in. Come the start of each week, when we put out the trash bags and recycle bins (3 in total), we can see the difference that recycling has made on the number of trash bags we have to put stickers on. We are saving, on average $10 a month on trash stickers, thanks to our recycling efforts. And, our "green" living doesn't stop there. We also created a compost bin the back yard, where I throw my cooking and leftover food scraps.
With all the money we save by recycling, I am able to stock the pantry with "green" cleaning products. One of my favorites is Green Works All-Purpose Cleaner.

I was introduced to the Green Works brand by a fellow cancer patient, who couldn't stop raving about how natural it was, and how she didn't have to smell harsh chemicals while cleaning. And, when I made the switch, not only did I see what she was talking about in regards to no strong chemical smells that seems to linger, unless a window was cracked, but I was also amazed at how well the Green Works Eco-friendly line of cleaning products got my house sparkling clean. From the kitchen countertops to the bathroom area, the rooms of my home smelled fresh and clean, and looked it, too. I had so many people comment on how clean the house looked, when they would come and visit me during my cancer treatment. While I was not cleaning at the time, my parents and husband assumed the cleaning responsibilities, and would comment on how easy to use the Green Works products were, and how well they worked, compared to other cleaning products I had used in the past. If you wanted, you could eat off the floor, my father would always say. :-)
