Last week, I was sent a fun gift pack from the folks at MyBlogSpark, which contained the following goodies:

  • Market basket
  • Avocado keeper
  • Chopper with storage bowls
  • Old El Paso® Taco & Fajita Tortillas
  • Old El Paso® Taco Seasoning
I was tempted to bring this market basket filled with the Old El Paso products, along with the chopper and storage bowls to my parents summer home during the 4th of July vacation, just to try them out.  I don't know about you, but I loved taco night growing up.  My mom would fill the dining room table with bowls of all the fixings you could think of to fill our crispy hard taco shells well.  I remember always hogging the freshly cut tomatoes, which my mom had picked from our garden earlier in the day.  There is something about home grown veggies that makes them taste better than anything you can buy at a grocery store. But, I decided not to bring this gift pack, as I wanted to save it for a meal when we arrived home.

My girls have never had taco or fajitas for that matter, so it would be an experience to say the least, when serving it to them for the first time.  I have shared in the past how we are members of a local CSA, where we pick up fresh veggies from a local farm from June through early September.  Usually at the start of the CSA food share season, they send us home with a variety of greens, including ones we have never seen before.  I have found that being a part of this CSA not only lets us help support local farmers, but also saves up $$$ on veggies that we would otherwise pay top dollar for at the market.  And, in the process, we also get to try vegetables that we have never seen before, which my husband and I love.  If it wasn't for this CSA food share, he would never have tried kale, which he now loves.  He eats it raw, adds it to his AM smoothies, and even makes kale chips in the oven.

So, when I was contacted by the folks at MyBlogSpark to see about participating in their Farmer's Market and Old El Paso campaign, my mind began racing, as I thought about the different veggies we recently picked up in our weekly CSA food share, and how I could serve them up with the taco and fajita mixes.  Within a matter of days of accepting this fun campaign, I received the goodies described above.  Now to just find the time to make tacos and chicken fajitas.

Well, last night, instead of serving pasta like I usually do on Wednesday nights, I switched it up and have a fun Mexican night.  And, just like my mother used to do, I filled the dining room table with all the fixings one would want to add to their chicken fajitas and tacos.  Here is a photo I took before we sat down to eat:

Looks good, huh?  Well, it tasted amazing.  I had never used the Old El Paso chicken fajita mix before, so I wasn't sure if we would like it.  It was a hit with both my husband and I, while my girls thought it was a little spicy, as I added peppers to the mix.  As for the tacos, I ended up leaving some hamburger plain, while adding the Old El Paso seasoning to the other half, just in case the girls didn't care for the seasoning.  While Savannah though the taco seasoning was spicy, Arabella couldn't stop asking for more. :-)  As a mom to a picky eater (Savannah), it was nice to see her enjoying taco/fajita night with us, and actually eating the food on her plate.  Besides experimenting with the new flavors, I think she enjoyed spooning the fixings like black beans, shredded cheese and tomatoes onto her plate. :-)

Overall, we had a great time trying out the different Old El Paso products, paired with some of the veggies we had picked up on Tuesday from our CSA Food Share.  As I sat watching my girls and husband reach for seconds and thirds, I couldn't help but reminisce about my youth and how my family would file around the dining room table, filling our own taco shells. :-)  I can't wait for the next Mexican Taco/Fajita night at our house!
