Synopsis

"From the writers of The Hangover comes a movie 21 years in the making. Straight-A college student Jeff Chang (JUSTIN CHON of the Twilight Saga) has always done what’s expected of him. But when his two best friends Casey (SKYLAR ASTIN of Pitch Perfect, Wreck-It Ralph) and Miller (MILES TELLER of The Spectacular Now, Project X, Rabbit Hole) surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, he decides to do what’s unexpected for a change, even though his critical medical school interview is early the next morning. What was supposed to be one beer becomes one night of chaos, over indulgence and utter debauchery in this outrageous comedy."

My Thoughts:

Don't you hate it when you get psyched up about a movie, and then you are let down as you begin watching it?  This is what happened last night when my husband and I put on 21 & over to watch.  Knowing that is was from the writers who brought us The Hangover, I thought it would be a laugh out loud adult film to watch.  Yes, it deals with young adults in their early 20's, but movies like American Pie and Super Bad were great, and so much funnier than this movie was.

While the film was not a total let down, it didn't have the laugh out loud until you start to cry factor that you would expect from the writers of such movies as The Hangover.  Yes, my husband and I found ourselves laughing here and there, but they were expected scenes.  Some scenes felt forced, while others made we wonder why other young comedic actors weren't cast in this film.  Maybe this would have made it funnier.

But, I do have to say that the gag reel, which is part of the bonus feature, really was hilarious.  I don't know what it is with gag reels, but even films that aren't that good, seem to get the most laughs when they include a gag reel.

Maybe if I was 10 years younger, this film would be more enjoyable and funny.  But, with two young children at home and limited time to watch movies, I was disappointed after watching this film.  I think I would have rather watched The Hangover for the umpteenth time instead.

Did you end up seeing 21 & Over in theaters, or recently on DVD?  If so, what did you think?  Did you make you laugh?  I would love to hear what you thought about it.  Maybe I am missing something, or am just too overtired to appreciate this film.
