"The internationally renowned Parsons Dance will perform five contemporary pieces choreographed by its prolific artistic director, David Parsons, on Jorgensen’s stage Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 8 p.m. An audience Q&A with the dancers will follow the performance.
The company’s show on the UConn campus comes just before Parsons Dance flies to China for a performance the following Saturday, April 20. Parsons Dance tours an average of 32 weeks a year, outside its season at home in New York, having appeared in more than 250 cities, 35 countries and six continents.
The New York Times has called David Parsons “one of the great movers of modern dance.” Parsons has choreographed more than 80 works for Parsons Dance and has received commissions from The American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jacob’s Pillow and the Spoleto Festival, among others. He received the Dance Masters of America annual award in 2011, the 2000 Dance Magazine Award and the 2001 American Choreography Award for his work with AEROS, a production featuring the Romanian Gymnastic Federation broadcast on the Bravo Channel. Born in Chicago and raised in Kansas City, Parsons was a leading dancer and contributor of works for The Paul Taylor Dance Company. His work has been performed by Paris Opera Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Nederlands Danse Theatre, National Ballet of Canada, Hubbard Street Dance and BatSheva Dance Company of Israel.
In the Jorgensen program, combinations from the 12-dancer troupe will perform “Round My World” (2012), “Hand Dance” (2003), “Nascimento Novo” (2006), “Caught” (1982), with strobe light, and “Swing Shift” (2003), all David Parsons originals.
In addition to choreography and performance, Parsons Dance is committed to audience development and arts education for participants of all ages and all levels of artistic experience. Parsons Dance regularly offers outreach opportunities, including post-show discussions, master classes, open rehearsals and studio showcases. In partnership with Marymount Manhattan College, from which several in the Parsons company hold degrees, and Broadway Dance Center, Parsons Dance offers year-round training opportunities in New York for professional and pre-professional dancers from throughout the world.
Jorgensen was named Best College/University Performing Arts Center in the Hartford Advocate Best of Hartford Readers’ Poll for 2013 and 2012, and was named a Reader’s Choice Winner by the Mansfield-Storrs Patch."
