This Week is Fire Prevention Week -- Is Your Family Prepared in Case of a Fire? Read on for Great Tips

Whether it’s cooking in the kitchen or steam from the shower, everyone has experienced the piercing shriek that sounds when your smoke alarm goes off without a real fire. Although it can be just a false alarm, kids can be left scared and unsettled by the noise. Even more dangerous, to avoid the noisy problem in the future, many choose not to reconnect smoke alarms creating a potentially deadly problem. In fact, a survey by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Fire Prevention Week is a good reminder to check the batteries in your smoke alarms, or even update them -- say for instance to the IoPhic.  I want sent one of these new smoke alarms to use in my home.  And, thankfully I haven't had to use it to tell you how well it works.  But, based on what I have read about this new smoke alarm, I am confident it will do its job.

Here are some additional steps to help protect your family from a fire:

• Install and maintain a working smoke alarm outside of every sleep area and remember to change the battery at least once a year.  We use Fire Prevention Week and the two times a year when we set our clocks forward or backwards as a reminder in our house.
  
• Designate two escape routes from each bedroom and practice them regularly.
  
• Teach everyone the "Stop, Drop, and Roll" technique in case clothing catches on fire.
  
• Avoid storing old mattresses in the home or garage.
  
• Teach kids that matches, lighters and candles are tools, not toys. If you suspect that a child is playing with fire, check under beds and in closets for telltale signs like burned matches. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet.
