SYNOPSIS
Grace
(Mendes) is a single mom. She is too busy juggling work, bills and the very
married Dr. Hartford (Modine), to give her daughter, Ansiedad (Ramirez) the
attention she desperately needs. When Ansiedad’s
English teacher, Ms. Armstrong (Arquette), introduces her students to classic
coming-of-age stories, Ansiedad is inspired to skip adolescence and jump-start
her life without mom. While Grace becomes preoccupied with the increasing
affections of her co-worker (Derbez), Ansiedad enlists the help of her loyal
friend, Tavita (Rodriguez), to plot her shortcut to “adulthood.” But as her
misguided plan unravels, Ansiedad and Grace must learn that sometimes
growing-up means acting your age.

My Thoughts:
Categorized as a "teen film," I watched GIRL in PROGESS over the weekend and have to say it was better than I had expected. I have been a fan of Eva Mendes' for years, but wondered how she would be in a role as a single mom to a tween. And, safe to say after watching this recent new release, that she nailed it. As for Cierra Ramirez, who can also be seen on The Secret Life of an American Teenager as a pregnant teen, steals the show.
Eva Mendes does a great job in showing the struggles a mom who works two jobs to help support her family, all while raising her daughter alone, has to go through. And, even though she is trying to have her own life as she became a mom at seventeen, it takes talks with her daughter and her daughter's teacher, played by Patricia Arquette, to see that she is absent in her daughter's life when she needs her most.
Even though my daughters are young, I can only imagine how hard it will be when they get into their tween/teens years. I know I went through a rebellious stage -- who doesn't? But, my parents were together and could support each other in their parenting of myself and my two brothers. While Cierra's character wants to skip over her teen years and become an adult, she is merely rebelling to maker her mother see her and see that she needs a mother more than ever.
This coming of age film about wanting to grow up too fast would be great to watch with your teens, and to discuss opening afterwards their thoughts on the movie and how they are feeling in their own lives. You may think you know what is going on, but think back to when you were in high school and you felt that your parents didn't get you. Definitely a worth worth watching!
