Arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray October 30th -- Ruby Sparks (Review)

Ruby Sparks

Synopsis:

From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine comes a “charming and delightful” (Marshall Fine,Huffingtonpost.com) romantic comedy starring Paul Dano and writer-actress Zoe Kazan.  Struggling with writer’s block and a lackluster love life, once-famous novelist Calvin (Dano) creates a beautiful fictitious character named Ruby (Kazan) who inspires him. But not only does this bring his work to life- it also brings Ruby to life- literally! Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould,Ruby Sparks is a smart coming-of-age story that proves true love can be remarkably magical."

My Thoughts:

After seeing Paul Dano in Being Flynn earlier this year, I have become an instant fan of this up and coming actor, who seems to be cast as the lead in many independent and blockbuster films.  If you follow my blog, then you know that when I am not watching children's movies with my girls :-), I enjoy having a nice, quiet date night with my husband and watching independent films.  Even though many independent films are low-budget movies, their storyline and cast are stellar and put current new releases to shame.

I missed this film when it was released back in July with limited release.  But, I made a point to note when it was releasing on DVD, so that I could pick up a copy.  Even though I was waiting on a screener copy to arrive (it came today), I couldn't help but rent it over the weekend from an online rental site.  And, I am so glad that I did, as the movie was great.  This romantic comedy, centers around Paul Dano's character, Calvin, as he tries to work through writer's block and pen another best selling title.  It is not until he is given a writing assignment by his therapist that his writing block seems to disappear.  And, with this new book idea comes the creation of Ruby Sparks.  Calvin has been seeing Ruby in his dreams, but makes her appear when he gets his visions on paper, when sitting down at his typewriter.

What would you do if you could create a person and make them real, only to control their thoughts and actions by merely getting them down on paper?  Well, this is what Calvin does, and as the movie progresses, we learn that temptation and control weigh heavily on his relationship, until it finally crumbles before him.  This thought provoking film will have you wondering if Ruby Sparks was every really real, as the final scenes play out.  Don't worry I am not going to ruin the ending for you. :-)

With all the recent indie films I have seen lately, this movie is by far my favorite.  And, Paul Dano gives another stellar performance, that is worthy of an award.  Are you familiar with this actor?  If not, Ruby Sparks will give you a glimpse at how talented he really is.  I can't wait to see future films, including For Ellen, that will star this up and coming actor.  But, in the meantime, I will enjoy this and previous releases starring Paul Dano.

Disclosure: I was sent a screener copy of this film from the vendor in order to write up an honest review.  The views above are mine and mine alone.
