Growing up I was a huge fan of famous stars who had passed away, like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Elvis, etc. I collected all their videos, postcards -- anything I could get my hands, and could afford with my allowance as a child. In addition to collecting movie star memorabilia, I also collected classic Americana home decor and novelty items. The one item I always wanted to get, but couldn't afford at the time was the infamous black Kit-Cat clock. I had seen it in many movies and magazines I had collected, and though it would look great in my room. I remember asking Santa for it a few times, but I guess it was out of stock during those Christmas seasons :-)
Now that I am older and have a family of my own, I still stop and watch films from these great actors when they are on and the children are sleeping. And, I always stop when we are out and about and look at the retro products in stores. Each and every time I am browsing these types of stores, I always seen the Kit-Cat clock in photos or available for purchase. I don't know why I never picked it up -- maybe because I thought it would look funny in our primitive style house? Well, thanks to the folks that make the Kit-Cat clock and have been since 1932, I finally have the clock and it is hanging in my home office. Once it was up on my wall, and I was sitting in my office chair looking up at it, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. Who knew it would take over 25 years to get the clock I always wished and asked for? And, now that I have it, I can't help but smile every time I walk past it, or sit at my desk. I find myself getting lost in its eyes, as they move side by side. I can thank this clock for those few times I lost track of time and let the hour go by, when I should have been writing. :-)
Last week, my parents came to visit. They have to walk past my office to come upstairs to the main area of the house. As my dad passed by the office, he caught a glimpse of the Kit-Cat clock. Having to take a second look, I found him wandering into the office. He stood there for a few minutes just looking at the clock. When I asked him what he thought, he began to tear up. Not knowing why, I asked him, what was wrong. He told him that he had received this clock as child from his father for Christmas. And, years later, when his father passed away, the clock stopped working. His mother not knowing how to fix it, threw it out on him. This was a sad day in his life, as he cherished this clock. After he said this, he left my office and proceeded upstairs to see the girls. That night, I thought about this and decided to give this clock to my father.
These past few weeks, my parents have been having their walls replaced in their house. After the final coat of paint was applied, I surprised by Dad with a gift. He didn't know what it was, until he opened the box. I wish I had a camera to catch the smile on his face. I told him that I was sharing my Kit-Cat clock with him, and hoped it would bring him joy each time he looks at, when he is sitting in his living room. He told me to keep it at first, as he knew how much I wanted one (for years). But, I told him that it had more sentimental meaning for him, than it did for me. I loved the look and feel of this iconic clock, but, to him, it reminded him of his father and that special gift that he was given by his Dad. Now, I was giving him a special gift for Father's Day! I told him that whenever I come to visit, we can both enjoy the clock, as we sit and watch my daughters play.
