Summary:

Mothers and daughters. They are, at the same time, very similar and completely unique. This relationship - through birth, childhood, teen years, adulthood, grandchildren, aging, and every step in between - can be the best, the hardest, and the sweetest. Mothers and daughters will laugh, cry, and find inspiration in this collection of stories that remind them of their shared love, appreciation and special bond.

My Thoughts:

It is only fitting to offer a Chicken Soup for the Soul book as part of my Mother's Day Gift Giving Guide.  I received this book over the weekend, and read it in one sitting.  Becoming a mom and having two daughters of my own, have made me appreciate the relationship that I have with my mother.  There were times back in college, that I wanted my freedom, and thought that my parents wanted to control my life.  It is not until years later, that I realized that they were only trying to look out for me, and wanted the best for me.  And, now, years later, my relationship with my mother is stronger than ever.  I hope to instill the values she instilled in me to my girls, and love that she is able to be by my side, as watch the girls grow.  Both of my daughters are miracle babies, as I was told by my oncologists that I wouldn't be able to have children as a result of my cancer treatment a few years back.  Because of this experience and obstacle in my life, I take each day as a gift, and look forward to waking to see what new things my daughters discover, and take in their infectious laughter and smiles that make you melt.

As I read through the 101 inspirational stories about the strong mother-daughter bond, I began to reminisce of those mother/daughter moments I have shared over the years with my mom. I smiled as I recalled beauty nights we had growing up.  While my brothers went to the movies with my father, I would do my mother's hair and makeup.  I can't tell you how many times I burnt her with the curling iron, or make her look like a clown, but each and every time, she sat there and let me make her up.  She did this, as it was a way to bond and share time with me.  As I grew, so did our bonding moments.  We would sit for hours and talk about school and life events.  She would offer advice when I needed it, or just a shoulder to lean on, or even a hug, letting me know everything would be all right.  And, when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, she was by my side through it all.  She kept a brave face, and made sure I remained positive through it all, even though I overheard her many nights crying and asking God to heal me.  But, through it all, the special bond a mother and daughter have has remained strong.  I can tell through each of the stories shared in this book, that this special relationship is one to be celebrated every day of the year.  Each story will inspire you, and have you thinking back to memories you have shared with your mother.  Hopefully, down the road, my daughters will look back and enjoy tea parties, beauty nights, etc., and cherish the mother/daughter bond they have with me, as I do with my mother.
