Now Available on DVD -- The Confession, Starring Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt (Review)

Synopsis:

THE CONFESSION is a tale of unique redemption and an exploration of good and evil featuring a hit man (Kiefer Sutherland, 24) and a priest (Academy Award® nominee John Hurt, The Elephant Man). On Christmas Eve, the hit man enters a church to confess his sins. Through a series of gripping flashbacks, the Confessor’s journey is revealed, laying out what has brought him to this moment and leading to a climax where his chance at ultimate redemption hangs in the balance. While at first the Confessor seems to be an evil, cold-blooded killing machine and the Priest the ultimate arbiter of good, as time passes, it becomes clear that both men are much more complicated than either could have suspected.

My Thoughts:

If you were a fan of 24, starring Keifer Sutherland, then you will love this DVD, which was a 10 episode web series, written and directed by Brad Mirman.  I missed the web series, which premiered on Hulu back in March of 2011, but was excited to find out it was coming to DVD.  The series, which is 60 minutes in length, will have you just as entertained than if you were watching the hit television series, which spanned 24 hrs. over 8 seasons.  Similar to 24, this series includes sound effects of silenced handguns, and lighting that really makes this series.  Each episode is only 5-7 minutes, but has you intrigued from start to finish.

The plot is simple, a Hitman played by Kiefer Sutherland seeks out guidance from a priest played by John Hurt.  During the confession, viewers are shown flashbacks of killings, which are then discussed between the Hitman and priest.  They argue about God and the right to live or die.  As the episodes progress, we learn that the priest is the Hitman's father, who left him as a child, after being an alcoholic and abusive.  The Hitman's mother committed suicide because of the priest's behavior, which in turn made him retaliate and go on a killing spree as a Hitman. When the Hitman tells the priest that he is there to kill him and that he blames him for the way that he is, viewers see the priest apologize and ask for forgiveness.  Will the priest die at the hands of his son, the Hitman? Or, will the Hitman have a change of hard, and give up this killing ways, and work towards mending this broken relationship?  I am not going to tell.  You will have to pick up this DVD and see for yourself.  I will tell you, though, you will not be disappointed by the ending, and Kiefer Sutherland does an amazing job in this dark thriller.  I am so glad I was finally about to this see web-series in its entirety, as it was great!

Disclosure:  I was sent a copy of this DVD from the vendor in order to write up an honest review.  The views above are mine and mine alone.
