Synopsis:
The most celebrated actress of our time stars as the most powerful woman of her time. Oscar® winning* Meryl Streep, the most nominated performer in Academy Award® history, delivers the definitive portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, the enigmatic, highly controversial figure who became the first and only female Prime Minister of England. Much more than a biographical epic, The Iron Lady is also the surprisingly intimate journey of a “common” grocer’s daughter whose social ambition and steel will — along with the love of her husband and confidant, Denis (Academy Award® winner** Jim Broadbent) — propelled her to unprecedented power in a world dominated by men
My Thoughts:
I really wanted to see this movie when it came out in theaters last year, but missed it due to welcoming our second daughter and then having to tend to her pyloric stenosis diagnosis and need for surgery. So, when I heard it was coming out on DVD, I marked my calendar, as not to miss it this time around. One reason that I wanted to see this film was that it starred one of my favorite actresses, Meryl Streep. Come on, who doesn't like Meryl Streep? I love how she melds right into a role and makes you believe that she is really the character she is portraying. And, she does the same in this film, as she portrays Margaret Thatcher.
I ended up watching this movie this past weekend with my mother, as she too wanted to see the film when it was in theaters, but missed it. So, while my husband and father took the girls out for bonding time, my mom and I popped some popcorn, and nestled in on the couch to watch this film. Wow!, What an amazing job Meryl Streep did in capturing this highly controversial figure. If you don't know of Margaret Thatcher, or don't have an opinion of her as a public figure, don't worry,as this film will not only share intimate look into her life, and really appreciate how she overcame so much, and was able to stand side by side with powerful men, who dominated the world.
I loved how the film using flashbacks of her modest beginnings a grocer's daughter, to her rise to become the first and only woman Prime Minister in England's history. In addition to flashbacks, the use of ghosts of her husband and daughter, offer a personal look into the struggles between a wife and husband and mother and daughter, as Margaret Thatcher stopped at nothing to get to where she wanted to be, at times putting family on the back burner. Margaret Thatcher was truly an ambition woman, who persevered in a male dominated world, where other women would not have even thought to step foot, and this is seen through this intimidate bio pic.
There were times that I felt this movie dragged, but again, I was in awe at Meryl's Streep's stellar performance, so this helped to keep me engaged. In the end, both my mother and I had a greater appreciation for the accomplishments of Margaret Thatcher and of the obstacles she overcome to get to the top. If you want to share an inspirational look of one woman's rise to power with your daughter this Mother's Day, why not pick up a copy of Iron Lady today. And, if you do, I would love to hear what you thought of it.
