Why Should We Teach Our Kids About Money?:
Remember when you were a kid and had no idea what it was like to pay
bills? Parents often shelter their kids from grown-up realities about
money. But in our attempts to protect them from "real world" truths, we
can fail to teach them about money at all.
As a result, we're raising a whole generation with "sucker" stamped on their foreheads. When your kids leave home, they need to know how to handle the financial challenges and temptations they'll face. They
should be aware of the hidden dangers behind those credit card offers
and that driving a used car isn't such a bad thing. It's our job as
parents to get this message through to them.
Consider these alarming stats:
- 54% of parents rated their teenager's knowledge of money
management as either "good" or "excellent," but 78% percent of the
children of those respondents rated their own knowledge of money
management as merely average or even poor. (Capital One and Consumer
Action, 2003)
- Only 26% of 13-21 year olds surveyed said that their parents taught them how to manage money. (JumpStart Coalition for Financial Literacy)
- The fastest growing group declaring bankruptcy is young adults, ages 20 to 24. (Alejandro Cabezut, 2004)
Those numbers make it clear that we have not taught our
children how to handle money. Young people are making mistakes with
zeros at the end of them. These mistakes can take years to overcome. But
if you teach your children how to handle money when they’re young, they
won't end up with money regrets later on in life. You can give them the
head start you wish you'd had.

My Thoughts:
Even though my two girls are too young to enjoy and learn from this kit, I am so glad I was able to review it, and now have it on hand to share with them, when they get a little older. This kit, put out by Dave Ramsey is jam packed with fun and educational ways to teach children about the importance of saving, spending and over money management.
I remember as a child, I would always look forward to Saturdays, as this was the day that I received my allowance for the week. I earned $1.00 if I completed all my chores, which included cleaning my room, help setting and clearing the table nightly and bringing down my laundry each Friday night. I had a plastic water jug in my closet, where I would put my earning money, as well as loose change I found or was given. I loved trips to the market with my father, as he would give me his loose change after the transaction was done. Over time, I would save up enough money to buy a toy I wanted, or a special treat at the store or a restaurant. And, when birthdays and holidays rolled around, I was given more money from family and friends, which meant more opportunity to save and then spend down the road.
As a child, I was taught to save my money in order to be able to purchase something that I wanted. If I didn't have the money saved, then I couldn't buy it. Each spring and winter, we would go through our clothes and donate them to charity, in addition to my parents giving money to charity. I don't remember ever being asked to give some of my earned allowance money or gift money to charity, until I was in my teens. I don't know if I would have wanted to part with my piggy bank money at a younger age, as money to me was just to save and spend on myself. But, now that I am older, I see money in a different light, and hope to instill these values in my daughters. With the help of the kid's bank, that is included in this set, I will be able to teach my daughters to save, give and spend their earned money. In addition, with the colorful books and audio set, teaching about money will not be a chore. Instead, I will be able to make it fun, which will make my daughters want to learn about creating a money plan, paying of debts, saving their money and spending consciously and not frivolously. Hat's off to Dave Ramsey for this fun kid's set. I have been reading Dave's books for over a year now, and have found useful tips that my husband and I have applied to our daily lives. As a result, we have cut our debt, created a necessary nest egg, and now how a money plan in place. Children can get on this track at a young age, so that when they are adults, they will know the importance of spending and saving, and not have money issues, like credit card debt, etc.
If you are looking for a fun way to educate your child(ren) about finances, why not pick up this kit today. You can even order each portion of the kit individually, which is great for money-conscious spenders. This is one investment that will be worthwhile not only for your child, but for you, as it will help make raising a financially responsible child easier.

One of our tips is to never go shopping without a plan of what you need to buy and not to stray from the plan. I would love to have this for my kids. cwitherstine at zoominternet dot net

ReplyDeleteI found that by using cloth napkins, we save on paper towel and paper napkins. I went to thrift and garage sales, picked up all different kinds. Took awhile to get everyone to adjust to grabbing cloth instead of paper, but finally, it is second nature! Found that we buy less paper!
