Congrats to Grandma Carol B.
About the Movie:
It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.
In the lead up to
this historical season, major universities are preparing their game
plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic
college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the
season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata
College.
Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.
From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!
While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.
Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

My Thoughts:
I had a girls movie day today, as my parents came to visit for the day with the girls, and while my dad spent time with the girls, my mom and I were able to sit and chat, and take in this great movie. I always loved watching those Sunday night movie specials on Hallmark -- you know what I am talking about -- the chick flicks, that will make you smile one minute, and cry the next. Well, this movie fits right into that category, except there was more smiling, than crying. If you read some of my previous posts, then you know that I like baseball over most other sports. But, when it comes to watching sports in movies, I am open to most, and have recently enjoyed a football movie, the Undefeated.
I received an advance copy of this film prior to its release on DVD tomorrow (2/21), and was eager to watch it. Looking at the DVD cover art, it reminded me of the early 90's film, Sister Act. But, this one wasn't based around singing. Instead, the film followed a girl's basketball team and their coach, Cathy Rush, as they try to create a winning collegiate women's basketball team.
Overall, this was an enjoyable especially. My favorite parts were the cheering squad of elderly nuns, and the feisty assistant coach, Sister Sunday. They were so fun to watch, and really added to the enjoyment of this film. I also loved watching Coach Rush shape the women's basketball team from the ground up. It was inspiring to see how she came to a team who didn't even have a gymnasium to practice in, to helping build a strong bond between her and her women's basketball team. Even though there were doubters, she looked past the adversity and cultural barriers, to eventually bring a team and school together.
If you love inspirational movies, you will definitely love this film. It would make for a great family film, or one to watch with your girlfriends or moms. You will be cheering for Coach Rush and Immaculata girls basketball team, as they attempt to make it to the national championships. Do they make it? And, if so, do they win the championship? I am not going to spoil the ending for you. You will have to watch the movie for yourself!
